we were told at our oath ceremony it was ok to make a black and white copy of it, but NOT a color copy!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

LOL, we were also told to make a copy with no restrictions as to color. But reading the fines and all that, did use my photo software to type in, "This is a copy for USCIS Purposes Only", in red letters. But any idiot can tell it's a copy.

One USCIS with 80 some odd field offices with an additional 80 sets of new rules. One country with 50 states, with also 50 different sets of new rules, it's crazy.

What is it about human nature where a couple of guys get together and want to make rules?

I double checked and it says exactly in red text and caps:

"IT IS PUNISHABLE BY U. S. LAW TO COPY, PRINT, OR PHOTOGRAPH THIS CERTIFICATE WITHOUT LAWFUL AUTHORITY"

I would assume that 'copy' includes scanning or digitizing because in doing so one would make a copy, no matter the form.

hmm... does it say anything about scan or digitalized? how about all those when you go google images that popped up?

Keyword here is "Lawful Authority." The owner of the naturalization certificate has lawful authority over the certificate and can therefore, copy it, print it, and or scan it. Anyone else -except for some government agencies- does not have lawful authority over a certificate that's not their's. I hope this clears it up for everybody.

it's strange b/c they ask for either a certificate (birth or naturalized) or passport of your sponsor if you file for a family member for a green card or when you will out your N-400 based on a spouse. I copied my husband passport just to be safe, but they also state a naturalized certificate can be copied...
