I recently posted a topic, but i had forgotten to add this to it...

I was also wondering, after reading all the dicussion of Morroccan procedures...if anyone knows the Algerian process in which to able to register the civil marriage...as sister of mine had said they require much paperwork for Morrocco...is it that same for Algeria? I find myself wanting to cry...as i am in the beginning of this long path of being with the person i love... weakness in my heart and weakness in my faith let me to think is all this worth it?... i tell myself it is... so i pray God that it will be...

ANd i have the question of...untraditional meetings... i was told when they interview you they will put the spouse on a big exam... and how funny it is to some people,my religion has brought me the man i love, even if in a nontraditional way...and by this i mean...i didnt date or live together...or even long moments alone together...

If anyone out there has some info on Algeria...anything...even if off the topic i am posting about i would appreciate it...

May God have mercy on us all and bless me by letting us unite with our loved ones...amin.

the key is to be PATIENT and it's hard but we have to be PATIENT ..

Thanx so much Salwa ...it is i guess a comfort to have found this website and nice-helpful people like you, who seem to be going through almost the same thing as me... all the "governement" offices i have contact have offered little or no help on both sides, USA and Algeria. Even my fiancee, he cannot seem to get any information.

A few nice ladies have replied to me via email. but now I wonder if its better to get married there in Algeria or wait to get married here in the USA?! Seems like everytime i get an answer...5 more questions then pop into my head LoL...

And yes, trying always to be patient, faithful in my prayers and not forgetting the goal at the end of the tunnel...

Rule #1 Dont freak out yet... you are of the fortunate one who comes after a few of us who repeated the same bureaucratic circles.

Rule #2 The Algiers consulate seems to be the easiest to work with in the ME.NA Morocco and Algeria may as well be a world away from eachother in the difference. The last 3 interviews through Algiers, the consular officer took the prepared packet with all required documents, looked it over, came back to the beneficiary and tells them to come back for their visas. Approved, no questions asked. However you should be prepared for the worse and make sure you and your SO are mentally ready for the interview. Algiers is quick in responding to emails, usually the same day or next.

And also I havent heard of a case where traditions or religion was put into question, Algeria is a democracy and religion keeps its way out of peoples lives through the government as much as possible.

In regards to the marriage certificate, it is a big circle of paperwork as well. You need your birth certificate, a certificate from your local marriage registry (or wherever you get married) saying that you are not currently married, and I think you may need a type of permission letter ? (Sorry I did this hunt in December so the papers are kinda foggy.) You can get the papers easily, but then you have to come to Algeria and cruise downtown Algiers searching for someone to translate the documents for you, which is a challenge finding an English/French translator... The only good thing is that here the translators are cheaper. You can tell your SO to contact the Bureau d'Etranger in Alger Centre and they will tell him over the phone exactly what both of you need to get married. But after you get all that stuff together, there is a law now that Algerians have to have a month long background check before they're able to marry a foreigner. So.. you can do all that, stay in Algeria about a month and a half (it takes about 5 days for a translation) and wait for the marriage license, or you can do all that, leave and return to Algeria a second time to sign the marriage license... and then return to the states and file the marriage visa of your choice.

It is a really big paper trail to go through.. but you can do it if you like.. the K-1 fiance visa is actually the preferred visa through Algiers because they are faster, and with the difficulty of getting the marriage license in Algeria adds on extra unneeded time.

My husband and I just went through the process in Aug. 2005. We were applying for a K1 visa. I was visiting at the time and we went in for the interview, they looked to make sure we had everything and no questions were asked. It was so simply that it didn't seem right. They called us in about 3-5 days to make an appointment where we went in and they gave him the visa. It was really smooth process when all the paperwork was in order. We came back to the states and got married within the three month time limit. My heart goes out to you about the waiting process. I think we all go through it but in the end when you are finally together you will forget about how long it really took. Good luck and best wishes.
