Police Disarm Gunman at Jamaica Airport

Gunman Released CanJet Flight 918 Passengers, Kept Crew on Board

By LISA STARK and SARAH NETTER

April 20, 2009 —

A gunman who held five crew members of CanJet Flight 918 hostage overnight at Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica, surrendered this morning and everyone aboard the plane was released safely.

Authorities reportedly boarded the plane and disarmed the gunman, and he is currently being held in police custody.

The man initially took all 182 people onboard the flight hostage before eventually releasing the passengers, leaving the five crew members on the Boeing 737.

Flight 918 from Halifax, Nova Scotia, had made a scheduled stop in Montego Bay when the man boarded the plane late Sunday. He demanded money from the passengers and then requested to be flown to Cuba. The plane had been scheduled to stop in Cuba after leaving Jamaica.

A Canadian airline official reported that a shot may have been fired outside the jet, but CanJet Airlines Vice President Ken Woodside said that information had not been confirmed and nobody had been injured, according to The Associated Press.

Jamaican Information Minister Daryl Vaz told ABC News that the gunman appeared to be a "mentally challenged youngster" around 20 years old. Police have not released the man's identity, but his father reportedly helped authorities with negotiations.

Radio Jamaica reporter Latoya Johnson, stationed at the airport, told ABC News today that she saw the passengers after they were released from the plane and they seemed unharmed.

"We saw them ourselves," she said. "They were waving as they passed into their buses as they were being transported to hotels, and they all seemed to be fine."

Among the passengers on the plane was a wedding party.

Gunman's Father Assisting

Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding flew into Montego bay to assist the gunman's father in negotiations to help secure the safe release of the crew.

CanJet issued a statement prior to the gunman's surrender saying, "A full security operation is under way and CanJet is cooperating fully with the local authorities ... all passengers have been safely removed from the aircraft, but CanJet crew and the armed man remain onboard."

Security in the Caribbean has been a point of concern since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It is unknown how the gunman was able to gain entry on to the tarmac through the staff entrance.

U know my phone has been ringing off the hook with people calling me like see how bad it is over there blah blah blah.. Well wth all the crimes we have had here lately as well (in Pittsburgh three cops were killed, the immgration office in New York etc) I would say we have crime here too..

You know guys, I saw this on the Early Show this morning...my biggest thing is how in the heezy did this man manage to get through the security? As many armed officers as I see in JA?

On a brighter note, I will be headed 2 JA next Sunday (4/26-4/30). My husband needs me (not that he normally doesn't, but the last couple of weeks he's sounded more and more desperate and down :crying: , so I've going 2 be with him for a likkle while). Will anybody be down there during that time?

I just tried to call the embassy w/the number that IW posted way back on pg 27 (or something like that) & reached someone who then told me to call the main number ((876) 702-6000) and ask for the 'visa section'. Well, it was all automated prompts and once I finally got to the NIV press '2' part, it had a recording stating that most information you are seeking is on our website at blah blah blah...then it said, 'goodbye' and disconnected but still kept me connected so I finally hung up after a half minute. WTH??!? I'm just trying to find out that the DS-230 was received & at least in process & can't get through. This is the kinda stuff that makes this process frustrating! The waiting isn't so hard for me, it's the NOT KNOWING! If I knew without a doubt that they received the proper form and it didn't get lost or something, I'd be able to just relax and wait patiently.

I was remembering that I wanted to state that I think Jamerican SHOULD go for it and move there. It might be the hardest thing she's ever done but even if it is, it will be the most educational experience. It's not like she's planning on staying....she just wants to give it a try and why not? Just my likkle 2 cents dere!

Jawi, true what you say about these little girls prancing around on-line. I think I'd be VERY protective no matter what but even more so with a girl! And there aren't going to be any tiny shorts or tops because guess what? I'm not buying them! If my daughter wants to get a part-time job and buy her own hoochie clothes, well, we're still gonna have a talk but she certainly won't be wearing stuff like that off of my dime!

And that's funny that you shocked your son straight with the shirt thing!

Thank you for your support....was beginning to feel many people here were drinking a likkle to heavy out of the HATERAID punch bowl!! Its one thing to voice your opinion about something....another thing to make assumptions on how things will or won't turn out. It is a well thought out decision and feel no need to put ALL the info on FRONT PAGE on where, when or how everything is being set up to acheive a successful move. Again I'll say, I appreciate the concern for my safety but please lets not use it as an excuse to be mean or haters!

Jamerican - I seriously doubt anyone was drinking hateraid or being mean to you. People gave you advice who lived there. Most importantly - I got the impression people were warning about the violence. When I thinking about working in Kingston..I got good and bad advice...mostly bad...it's a tougher decision when you involve a child. At the end of the day it's your decision.

Thank you Shemmy. That's what I was going to say.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

LOL, yes, I know there are white Jamaicans - My first thought, when I heard he was white - was that he was Cuban, actually -

He has been identified - Stephen Fray of Montego Bay - no pic yet.

Okay...mek mi start call mi Mo Bay people dem....mi wah know how he reach so fast...and they need to fix that damn fence near dead end beach...I don't know if you remember when the kids got over that fence and ran onto the runway after the planes...all they did was role a bolder infront of the hole in the fence.
