QUOTE (Shaunsgal @ May 6 2009, 07:54 PM)

BTW My hubby and I went to the local office today to get his biometrics done. Do you know this man took 20 mins to decide which race to pick? He refused to put Black but the other options were not working either--hispanic, pacific islander, etc. Has anyone had this problem with their SO identifying themselves as Black or African American?

I think this is so ignorant and it irks the ish outta me, just because you are not African American don’t mean you not BLACK damn I cringe when I hear someone say I’m not BLACK I’m Jamaican it sound stupid! JAMAICAN IS A NATIONALITY NOT A RACE...

but is the option Black or African American? I don't like this generalization...

and plus Jamaica is mixed up..who knows what the heck they are...just because I have a darker skin tone than the next man...

it's not a generalization it's a fact being American is my nationality and ppl from Jamaica nationality is Jamaican, race is a whole diffrent category we are all mixed up but at the end of the day i know im black... Obama is mixed and he is not called our first mixed president he is called our first black president this is something i feel strong about if offends anyone sorry...

not my hubby but I DO

Please explain it to me. I just take it for granted that everyone who is dark, of color (i don't even know what term to use) is to be classified as black or AA. I realize this might be construed as ignorant, but please enlighten me. I want to see things from a Jamaican's point of view and be better in tune with my hubby. I am a first generation African so I know exactly what I am with no question.

In my eyes, I am neither African or American.

In England, the choice is 'Afro Caribbean, African or Black Other'

I love being Black and I'm proud...BUT in many of US know nothing about racism..NOTHING..like i have said many times..I was never aware of this until I got America...I do not want to be grouped..just because of my skin tone...they clasify ppl from say Spain in a different category than the Spanish...

That's understandable because being black is a majority in JA but here is is not, when applying to jobs or filling applications when they ask your race black is defined as having any type of ancestory linked to Africa, alot of spain dont consider themselves spanish but they are all Hispanics thats there race they nationality is Spaniards, its complicated
