I need ideas for some sort of memorial for my mother at our service, something beyond just mentioning her in the wedding program. She passed away after losing her fight with cancer two years ago. I don't want to dampen the mood but I also want to acknowledge the fact that I miss her and wish she could be there.

A candle is traditional, but it can pretty breezy right on the ocean.

Does anyone have any ideas?

~ Catherine

Did your Mom have a favourite flower? In a wedding I saw recently online (one of those "real wedding" features) the bride's Grandmother's favourite flower was a sunflower. She just added 2 big sunflowers under her actual bouquet (it was a pretty traditional white bouquet) and so they weren't completely visible, but just added a really nice touch. She did it in her Grandmother's remembrance so she could carry a piece of her the entire day. I loved the idea. You could have some of your mother's flowers in front of where you will get married.

What a great idea Catherine! Here are a few suggestions, I love the flower and remembrance table idea.

http://www.wedsmack.com/2007/08/rememberin...ur-wedding.html

Flowers

Flowers are a popular way to honor loved ones. One moving gesture is for the bride or groom to place a white rose in an empty chair (next to the aisle or in the first row) as they approach the altar. White roses are popular, but not necessary. Lilies of the valley for grandmother who loved them are wonderful. How about white carnations for a mother who loved their spicy fragrance? One bride placed one white mini calla in her bouquet for each person she wanted to remember.

Remembrance Tables

Couples like to top small banquet tables with photos, candles, vases of flowers or bouquets and explanatory signs at the reception. Sometimes, these items will be stand-alone. Sometimes, they'll show up at the ceremony on the guestbook table, or on the altar.

Music

If someone in the family has a gorgeous set of pipes, one of the most moving tributes is to have them sing a dedicated song at the ceremony. Another popular approach: ask the DJ to play a special dance for an aunt or grandfather who loved to shake it on the floor.

Clothing

A touching way to remember someone is to wear one of their personal items. Brides have worn their mother's or grandmother's veils, or sashes made from the wedding dress. Grooms have worn their father's tuxes or cufflinks. And let's not forget jewelry: brides have woven a rosary, locket or set of pearls into their bouquet, and worn a father's ring around their neck or on their thumb.

Donations

The "donation in lieu of favors" is a time-tested way to honor someone you've lost to a physical illness. Individual cards or a framed table note will let guests know who was on your mind. Some brides set out real or enamel ribbons symbolizing the type of loss involved: pink for breast cancer, teal for ovarian or testicular cancer, and so on. (See Awareness Ribbons Meaning & Colors.) Another option: the bride and her bridesmaids wear awareness bracelets. You can buy the awareness charms individually and make your own, or source the finished bracelet from a number of sites.

Symbols

Anything that reminds you of a loved one is fine: butterfly bouquet picks, for example. Or a picture-frame pin and photo pinned to a bouquet wrap ribbon, or a monogram pin in the letter of someone you've lost. A number of stores sell "In Loving Memory" brooches you can pin to a sash or ribbon. InsideWeddings tells of a bride who parked a pink and white 1957 Nash Metropolitan in front of the wedding tent in memory of her mother.

So I wanted to think of a cute way to ask my MOH and bridesmaids to be in my special day, I think I'm going to mail them a note instead of just asking over the telly, something more special. I found this website where I may order the cards from, what do you guys think about asking them that way?

The cards are definitely a nice way to ask them, go for it! I am thinking of sending a card to my flower girls, with maybe a book that I saw on the Knot.com, its a cute way for the parents to explain their "duties" as flower girls. I believe they are somewhere around the age of 5 or 6 and 3. The older one takes care of the younger one...at least in public anyways! LOL.

Catherine I was at a wedding recently where the seat where the mother of the bride would traditionally sit was left empty. The bride paused right before she reached the alter and placed a single daisy from her bouquet on the empty seat (I am guessing it was already loose and she was just holding it with her bouquet). It was very sweet and poignant.

Duh. That was one of JillA's suggestions. I should read better! I can say it WAS very sweet and not mood dampening in any way.

Also about invites: I ordered mine as "free" postcards on Vistaprint.com. Sign up for their email alerts and they send these free offers for 100 postcards. You just pay (comparatively expensive) shipping. So my invites, response cards and info cards cost about $18 (three sets of 100). You can upload your own image for an extra $5 or something, which I did. They have envelopes but I thought they were a bit thin so I found some thicker metallic ones online. I added some pretty vellum bands and ribbon which I bought on Ebay. So I think they whole thing cost well under $40.

Yay wedding! It is SO MUCH more fun planning this thing with the whole immigration smazzle over with. I'm excited!

Those are all very cute ideas, to remember a loved one. My father passed away 14 years ago, and I was thinking of ways to incorporate his memory into the wedding. I don't want it to be a big emotional event, rather just a simple gesture. I'm thinking placing a rose in one of the front seats would be a cute idea. I can't real wear anything of his (a big Toronto Blue Jays sweater may not fit the occasion) and playing a song in his honor would involve U2 of Bruce Springsteen... But nobody would get that except my mother and I. I was thinking about putting a picture of him somewhere, but I need to be careful... I don't want to give my mother ANOTHER reason to cry!

Not sure if my link works, if not go to http://etsy.com and then search the term "bridesmaid card" and usually there is a pretty decent selection.

I was wondering if I could get some advice from you guys. I don't know what to do for centerpieces! I've been looking online at pictures and I can't find any ideas that I just LOVE, so I have all these ideas in my head and nowhere to go with it. I want something kinda dynamic and interesting looking but not crazy and over the top. I don't want traditional floral centerpieces, infact I'd rather not mess with flowers at all. Something with candles and vases...? Any good ideas?

check out this website. you might find something u like. http://www.uprightdecor.com/ they are right across my work and we have used their centrepieces before and stole some of their ideas. lol. since we are an audio visual company we dont really do decor but we implemented some ideas to save money, we used L.E.D. lighting at the bottom of a vase (can be any color or even your own theme color). got a clear vase (square), and filled it with water and u can put pebbles in it if you'd like and we added curly twigs. (we also spray painted the twigs with silver paint) and its not so floral but still looks nice. we used it for Gala Events. it will look something like this with the water being lit up by the L.E.D. light.

oh yeah. im not sure if anyone has suggested this yet. but go to Michaels http://www.michaels.com/art/online/home

That's actually a really good deal if you ask me. We're looking to spend about $4.00/invite and then I'm doing my thank-you cards with my photographer and those are $2/each but I really loved them.

I think I have a problem when I 'love' something I just *have* to have it... but I seem to love a lot of expensive things  And then my justification is, well we're only doing it once... what the h.

That's what we budgeted and we're coming in way less that that. I'm hoping the extra savings will pay off somewhere....
