For ours I believe Ceremonial/Legal wedding is more appropriate. We aren't getting married in a church, but I will save you all from my thoughts on religion! Our wedding is outdoors.

My father passed away when I was young as well. My mother later remarried and my then step father adopted me. He will be the one walking me down the aisle. I'm very thankful he came into my life (no tears!)

Okay folks, we've gotta come up with a way to "label" the weddings, b/c I know people are gonna get confused. It would be nice to use the same terminologies for everyone, to keep it simple. :) Here is my thought...

~ We can always put "Legal" so people know that is the date for the marriage license.

~ We can put "Celebration" for the church (or place of worship) or ceremonial wedding that is/is not the legal marriage date.

~ We can put "Church" for the church (or place of worship) or "Ceremonial" for the wedding that is/is not legal, but the formal celebration.

What do you all think???

BTW, Chadlaure, Minnew, and Hapycloud... which wedding is this for you all?

PS

Way to steal my date, Kristin & TG!!! :P I had it first..... (KIDDING!!!!!) Wow, does that make me sound like my fourth graders, or WHAT?? Seriously, I am kidding. July 17th is a fabulous date! :)

Hey July09Bride the October 10th date is the Church and the Legal wedding.

I'm not even sure how it's going to work with me walking down an 'aisle'. We haven't entirely decided how formal we're going to make our bigger celebration. We're not sure if we want to have another ceremony or not... The legal ceremony in the U.S. will be us and our parents, and I think at that point I'll have my dad walk my down the aisle. I'm his only daughter, and I think he'd be sad to miss the opportunity.

I have a niece and nephew... both really young (niece is just over a month old, and nephew is 2 and a 1/2), which I thought would be neat if they could be ring bearer and flower girl, but I don't think they will be at our big family celebration as they are moving to Cambodia later this year and probably won't be back for the wedding. I wasn't able to attend my brother's wedding (my only sibling too), and now it looks like he won't be able to attend mine... great..

Sorry, went off a bit... lol

Has anyone found a good wedding planner that ISN'T all about "traditional" weddings? I like to keep notes/lists, because my memory is HORRIBLE, but I haven't found anything suitable to my tastes. I want something that will give me interesting off-beat, creative tips... but I don't really want a planner that says 'you have to do it this way!' :(

I don't think any wedding planner should say "you have to do it this way"! So many weddings these days are not traditional, and it's all up to you how you want it done. I'm doing lots of things that aren't tradtional, but I don't have a planner I'm doing it all myself.

Speaking of fathers..... since my daughter's father passed away when she was just little, she is having my father walk her down the aisle. (Hopefully, he is still with us, then, because he is getting on in age. :( ) Is anyone else having someone other than their father walk them down the aisle? I'm just wondering what to do about protocol and stuff. Do I need to make a speech, or say a few words, that the father would have made? Or do I leave all that up to my Dad? Does anyone know?

My father won't be able to come to my wedding :crying: , as because of his age, 82, and health problems he won't be able to get travel insurance, unless he wants to pay BIG bucks for it.

But my 23 year old son will be there, (he just got his passport recently) and he'll be the one walking me down the aisle. I felt it was more appropriate since we have such a good relationship and I'll be living so far away now. We both live in the same town here. He and his fiancee are looking forward to the trip. We're planning on taking them out to Myrtle Beach to one of the dinner shows there.

I totally agree with Jill. Its your wedding, it should be about what you want! Planning a wedding is really not that difficult, and it can often be a really fun and enriching experience. I understand that a lot of people don't have the time or interest to sink into planning their wedding alone, but I found that the distractions of wedding planning really helped keep my mind off the stresses of the immigration process. Its just something fun waiting at the end of the rainbow to help keep your eye on the prize!

I agree too. Its your wedding, it should be how you and your fiance envision it. Of course if its $$ involved and everyone is paying for it then it becomes stressful because then everyone has a say. The way I look at it, if everyone is paying for it that is fine, but please take into consideration how the bride and groom want the wedding to be, after all its about them! If its all about what everyone else wants then the wedding is about other peoples expectations which does not make a happy bride and groom.

I had a friend say to me, why are you getting so stressed out? Wedding planning should be fun, you should enjoy it! I am having fun with it, I do enjoy it but its not all roses! There are bumps along the way and there are things that are going to stress you out, especially with the immigration stuff piled onto of it if you aren't doing a civil + ceremonial wedding(later), planning from a distance sucks and in my situation the only person to help out with running around in the city we are getting married is my fiance. Some things I have gotten by being on the local boards on theknot.com, its how I got on-site hair and makeup for the big day! Some things I can do by phone without ever meeting in person. It helps that the last trip I took I got to view the venues, talk with a cake decorator, talk with the coordinators and the pastor.

The wedding planning is definitely a nice distraction from the 4 months I have left to spend in Canada and its nice that I am able to share the planning in person with my mom. I don't think I realized how much I am going to miss her until now :crying:

Sorry... I really should've clarified. By wedding 'planner', I meant like.. day planner... booklet... thing. Not a wedding planner PERSON.. I'm not wasting money to hire a 'planner'... I'm just looking for a good book to be able to write stuff down. LOL And/or a good wedding planning website... i.e. frugralbride.com or something

My bad... I wasn't able to explain that earlier, cause I can't do VJ at work. But thanks for your tips!!

I am sort of looking forward to planning this, but also REALLY don't want anything fancy... I don't really have anyone I can co-plan this with, which makes me kinda sad :( I mean, I guess my mom, but even so, she lives an hour and a 1/2 away, which isn't FAR, but far enough to make it difficult to do things together with her. Oh well. There's of course my fiance, but he's farrrr.... And doesn't get why we'd need to come up with any decisions right now since our reception with family/friends isn't until next summer. lol

It's okay! If you are looking for a good wedding planning website www.theknot.com is awesome! They have local boards to chat with other brides getting married in the same area! Q& A about etiquette, ideas for just about anything! Checklists! Budgeter! Guestlist Manager, A notebook to save ideas, the list goes on! I have also heard that WeddingWire.com is a good website as well, never used it, oh and I guess Martha Stewart has something similar as well.

Hi there! i agree that theknot.com is helpful. We are having our 'celebration' wedding July 17, 2010 and i was able to find my florist and baker through the knot. It was so easy and also helped to provide some inspiration surrounding colours and flower arrangements :)

Thanks for adding me/us to the wedding list July :)

And thanks for theknot recommendations! I did come across that site when I was looking for a host for our wedding website, but ya know, they all look the same after a while. lol So it's nice to have direct recommendations :) I will check it out!

Question for those of you doing 2 'ceremonies' even if one is just a civil one. Do you plan to 'dress' up for the civil ceremony? I am still trying to decide what I want to do. lol

We are doing 2 ceremonies mostly due to the fact that our visa will probably be approved close to the winter and both Toronto and Connecticut winters suck :( I will most likely wear a nice dress suit or something for our 'civil' ceremony and dress it up by wearing a really great pair of shoes :P For our 'celebration' ceremony - i'm going to Kleinfeld's in Manhattan to get my dress and i cannot wait! Either way, both ceremonies are a celebration and if you feel like dressing up for both, then you are totally entitled to :D

we got married by a marriage commissioner in a little chapel in Canada but when I finally moved to the US about a year later my SIL had a "wedding reception" for us, complete with a wedding cake and presents  none of his family came to the wedding... they said they didn't have the money but now that I gotten to know them I think it was more because they are scared of flying.. none of them have flown before

I was just thinking that maybe for our 10th anniversary we could do a renewal of our vows or something....

I didn't dress up too much, just a skirt and sweater. Nothing too fancy!
