Wow that's crazy! I can't believe they would do something like that. Were the bands not strangely light? I ask because my mother has a ring that is gold plated, and it is a lot lighter than the solid gold ones. It probably depends on what kind of material they're plating, and it sounds like someone was purposely trying to be deceptive.

We have a specific jeweler that we buy all of our jewelry from. She has been selling stuff to my husbands family for years. She's switched jewelry stores a few times, and then we just go where she goes. She's fantastic and always picks out great stuff. More importantly we trust she is telling the truth and giving us the best advise when we purchase things. So far so good.

I've never had a wedding band before - so no clue about what it should have felt like :) I only wear 2 rings - engagement and wedding band...it's funny because my engagement ring has always been brilliantly white gold so I should have known

Yes - they definitely were deceptive...but interestingly the price was comparable to Mappins or Youngs or anywhere else we'd looked and they weren't the cheapest either. According to teh website they've been around since 1910 and have many locations http://www.benmoss.com/Default.aspx

Learned a valuable lesson with insuring ur rings! Wife lost (or was stolen) her wedding and engagement rings at gym back in Aug. Rings were very valuable and we had their own insurance policy on them! last time we had them appraised was back in 2003. Should have had them appraised every few yrs! 1 thing our Insurance co stated that most stores, the appraisal is much higher than the true value of the rings--and insurance only pays for what it would cost to replace them! So even though you may have an appraisal for say $5000, if the insurance co can replace it for $3000, ur only going to get $3000. We had to go get an estimate on how much it would cost to re-make the ring! So ensure you have some good quality pics of the ring!! As the jeweller will need something to work off of! Even after we provided all of that, we stil had to argue a bit with the insurance company, lol! They are not in the business to loose $$$. So lesson learned---- have good quality pics of ur rings and if they are $$$$ get them appraised every few yrs!! And find a jewellery store u can trust! We are dealing with 1 in RI!! Don't think the wife is even going to wear the new ones, straight into the safety deposit box,lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

All I can say is be careful you ask questions at the jewelry store - we had a wedding ring nightmare about 1 yr after our wedding.

We had purchased them at Ben Moss in Canada (a reputable enough place you'd think) about 4 months before the wedding - white gold and each was engraved

1 year later I take my band off for some reason and was looking at it in the light and noticed it had 'flaked' near the engraving...now ...a wedding ring should NOT flake considering it's solid gold.

Well - guess what - it wasn't - they had sold us gold plated wedding bands....and it was almost funny because from the day we out them on - they didn't seem as 'white gold and gleaming' as we expected them to be...but we figured, ok - whatever. I was very, very upset - it pi$$ed me off that they had made something I considered important into a piece of cheap #######....the warrantee on a wedding ring which is engraved had long run out....we'd bought them in Canada and weren't planning on going anywhere back home anytime soon. We dropped by Jared's and they confirmed it was just gold plated.

So we ended up buying new bands at Kays and this time we went for Palladium - which is a step down from Platinum...a wee bit cheaper, but equally fine looking...slightly heavier them gold....and beautifully silver.

Definitely ensure you are getting solid gold...ask them to confirm...if that's what you want that is.

F...Ben Moss is all I have to say. I considered going to the Better Business Bureau back in Kitchener...but frankly....I don't have time

:wow:

Sorry that happened to you! Thanks for the warning! Unrelated, Kay Jewelers is likely where we're getting ours.

We had our first wedding fitting recently (my girls and I) and I'm so excited! I can't believe it's less than 6 weeks away now! I've been posting some of my planning details on my personal blog site (pixelulu.com) but I can't post all of it or else it won't be a surprise for our guests. Sigh. Now all I need to do is get the not-so-fun planning tasks out of the way

Sad to see this thread die :(

But in case anyone still follows it, we got a few wedding photos back so far: http://www.julieawhitlockblog.com/2011/01/11/ashley-and-daniel-winter-wonderland/

I'm in love with them! :D

Gorgeous - you did teh winter theme beautifully. I second Marilyn's comment about the cupcakes. Those colours are similar to my own theme and they look just perfect against the winter white and snow.

Haha, thanks! The cupcakes were one of the things I was most excited for. They were delicious AND beautiful! We have a lot of kids on both sides of our family, so we wanted to make things a little more fun - the cupcakes plus the candy buffet were a big hit with them :)

I have to agree with everyone. It looks like your wedding was wonderful, the colours were fantastic and the look of those cupcakes are making my mouth water right now.

This is the only part I missed out on having a court house wedding...oh well one day we will have a renewel ceremony and rock the house oh ya.

Thanks Hugglebuggles! :)

And Canadiandggal, that is pretty much what we did. We had a civil ceremony at the courthouse, which our family called "eloping" (although, to me, eloping is when you don't call everyone up beforehand and let them know you're doing it!), and then had the wedding ceremony and reception on our anniversary. It was a nice compromise, and worked out really well. Plus, we didn't have to worry about "cold feet" or anything like that - all that had been sorted out before the civil ceremony!

Another nice thing about doing it later is you can take as long as you want to save up and make sure that everything is exactly the way you want it :D
