well... this is my current engagement ring...

not the best pic, but you get the idea.

hampton03.jpg

Just the 3 stones and little ones on the side. It's ok, and I do like it, except that the band is really thin. It's smaller than it looks in the pic (I'm not being modest... it is.. LOL).

I can't find a pic of the wedding band we found, but it's actually quite similar to the engagement ring.

Something like this I guess.. this isn't it, but it's the closest I've found online, since the store we found it on doesn't have their catalog on their website

pZALE1-5831061t400.jpg

But it's got tiny diamonds along the sides too, and the slight curve so it fits along perfectly with my ring (I found that straight rings look weird and cause a gap when they're side by side), and also has some slightly larger diamonds in the centre that match perfectly with the ones in the engagement ring. Other than a slight colour difference and slight difference along the sides of the rings, it seriously looks like they were a match. Don't really think I'll get anything that'll go with it better.

ashen - I totally understand what you mean about wanting something to last forever and something that you love that is good quality.

I had been dreaming about my engagement ring for years. I knew I wanted a Round Solitaire on a high platinum setting with 4 prongs (although I wavered between 6 prongs). I also wanted a knife edge on a very slim band. I was particular. I am very detail oriented to say the leastt.

At first I wasn't really sure that my husband really understood me. I wanted him to pick the ring and so we never tried any rings on togethser. I got my ring sized and then I showed him an example of something similar at Birks one day, and that was it. I was so nervous that I wouldn't get what I had pictured in my mind.

This is where a really good jeweler comes in. Do not go to People's! Or Birks or even Tiffany's for that matter! They don't care about you! They care about the sale! You are much better off going to a smaller, Mom+Pop type jeweler who will work with you, within your budget and fulfill your wishes too. A lot of times custom made stuff is much cheaper than you would think.

I consider myself really lucky. My husband was referred to an amazing jeweler in the diamond district in NYC. He is just the nicest and most gracious guy ever. You would think that a guy trying to sell diamonds would do just that, but no, he really educated my husband, met him least 5 times to teach him about the diamonds, settings, bands etc. He asked about, what I liked, about our relationship. Sorry, I'm blabbering now, but my point is that he created the perfect ring within my husband's budget and made me the happiest girl in the world. I actually just met him yesterday because I noticed my diamond was loose and so I took it to him to get it tightened. I can see how my how my husband loved him. He really made the experience a lot less stressful for my husband and also made my husband realize that it is more than just a ring.

I cannot wait to go back and pick out our bands. I think I know what I want (an eternity very tiny 3 rows of diamond pave band). I think that my husband just wants a plain platinum band, but I think our jeweler will help us to find a way to personalize it a bit.

Anywho, I rambled here, but I really think you should branch out and see what your other options are. I'm almost confident you could find a really nice band for under $500, especially a men's band in white gold.

When you say you have been looking around online, have you looked at blueenile.com? That's where my husband looked at first for my ring, and their prices are actually decent. He still got a better deal with our jeweler, but if you can't find someone out there, I'd go with bluenile.com. They have a plain white gold men's band for $390 (4 mm) and $460 (5mm).

I'm confident you'll find a jeweler out there who could match that if not do something for less. You'll probably also get a better deal in the US. I just find jewelry here cheaper.

Out of curiosity, why are you guys purchasing your wedding set from Canada?

We're not necessarily... we just happened to go shopping for some after we were approved for the visa. Or rather, after we got back to London.

I'm a bit worried about leaving it until I get there, because we'll only have about 2 weeks before the wedding and don't know if that'll be enough time. I'm hoping he gets a chance to look around a bit in the next few weeks, but I don't know.

Cheer up Ashen . . . if ya'll can't afford a nice ring right now then just have him get one for an anniversary.

Guys loose their rings anyway . . .

It sounds like you have yours already, right?

Oh, and no, I don't have my wedding band either. It's also $500 for the one we saw that I described there. He at least realizes that it's hard to find a match since it didn't come with one, so I might be able to get that one after all, but I dunno... I mean, for him, he can get what he wants but within reason... I don't want him wearing a piece of ####### for the rest of his life  And I'm sorry, but you can't get anything good for $50 in the world of jewelry. Not for these purposes.

Your engagement ring looks just like mine, except yours has added stones on either side.

That brings up an inner debate I've been having: to solder or not to solder. My wedding band of choice looks almost like yours, only channel set and straight. If I solder the rings together (which I do want to do), it's not going to look right with the straight band, due to the gap you mentioned. But I like it a lot better than the curved sister ring somehow.

My mom's real opinionated on this little debate of mine, as her soldered rings (which were actually a set to begin with, v-curved into one another) are worn down in the back and are much thinner than the rest of the band as a result after twenty-some years.

So I either get the band I don't like as much and solder the rings together and perhaps risk having the same issue, or get the band I like and either let them twist individually on my finger (which bugs me to no end) or solder them and risk it not looking right.

Bleh, it's always the teeny details...

But in reading everyone's posts, I now know why Ben had me choose the ring: I never had any idea what I wanted it to look like, so I probably never emitted that "pick THAT one" feeling to him. I knew what I didn't want in a ring... but that doesn't come real helpful in picking one out, I'm sure.

My mom eventually had hers soldered together because hers were worn down in the back after many years. I had a wedding set soldered together because they didn't look right unless the designs were lined up properly.

It's really a personal choice, but I'd say to protect the life of your rings, soldering is probably a good idea.

Ashen I think your rings are BEAUTIFUL! I love smaller rings- they look feminine and dainty. I saw your engagement ring before on your wedding website. I think it is absolutely beautiful.

Thanks. I like them, aside from the band being thin (I don't know why that bugs me, but it does... haha). It's seriously not something I would've picked though. I dunno. aaahhh.. LOL I like it, but don't LOVE it, ya know?

Anyways... I am letting him pick his band, I'm just really disappointed/unhappy with him even considering $50 rings and that it seems like he's not understanding the significance of these rings. I dunno.. I mean he DOES understand, but is more focused on saving $, and I don't like that in this case.

He's actually really picky, which I found surprising. lol The 'too expensive' one that he picked out though was really nice, and I approve... haha I can't find a pic of it, or something that even looks like it online though.

The closest is this... except that it has smaller diamonds in the centre, and there's about 6 of them all spaced around the ring. He likes it because it's a spinner ring... the inside spins around, so he likes playing with it. I was fine with that at first, and thought it was funny/cute that he was so excited, but now I'm like 'wait, a wedding ring is not a TOY... I can just buy him a ring like that for Christmas if he wants', but I don't think he should get a wedding ring on the basis that it'd be fun to play with. I discovered that spinner rings are also called worry rings... that's a good idea for a wedding ring?!! Not so much! LOL

My ring pretty much looks like this:

Ring Picture

(I got my ring from this company too, very nice people)

My fiance was trying to get me to look at rings I can solder together, but I really don't like the look.

I'm just getting a plain band the same width and style as my engagement ring, so it'd probably look weird.

This is my engagement ring:

22778.jpg

It's only .25 carats but anything much bigger would look ridiculous on my hands (I have small hands with skinny fingers).

We had to buy the wedding ring from the manufacturer because of the ring design - but it was only $150. The nice thing about my rings being small - I can fit another one on the finger!

Mine aren't soldered together, but that's because I have allergy/hive issues such that I need to be able to wiggle both off individually at times.

My husband did great when picking out my ring! I never had any ideas of what I wanted or what I expected, but I don't think I could have picked out something better for me. I agree, wedding bands are important, its something you will wear everyday for the rest of your life. Bill's mom has upgraded her rings several times through the years, adding bigger stones, but I'm not sure I'd want to do that. It has meaning the way it is now! And I'm definitely not the type of person who would want a giant diamond.

I don't have any pictures of it together, but this is what it looks like without the wedding band(s) The picture doesn't really capture it to well, but I like how it has a sort of vintage/old fashioned feel.

I had mine put together because I didn't like them spinning around and moving. Its nice to have them one unit.
