A strange (or not so strange) situation...

When I was 19 I was told I have PCOS Polycystic Ovarian Syndrom. The reason I bring it up is... women with PCOS are less likely to get pregnant. I think the reason is because your monthly gift doesn't always arrive on time or sometimes not for a few months. I am afraid that I might not be able to have kids. The reason I posted this in MENA is because my MENA man really wants kids and the MENA area seems to put a lot of emphasis on family.

So since we have a lot of MENA mamas on this forum I wanted some advice. I was on birth control for two months (which keeps the gift coming regularly). I missed a few days in a row and couldn't catch up, so I stopped. Since then I've been waiting to get my gift so I can go back on BC but it hasn't come in almost 2 months. I guess I'm just worried, I don't know if this is "my normal" or if I am pregnant. I should probably take a pregnancy test, but I'm scared.

I don't even know why I posted this. I guess I just need support. I want to wait a little more time before I have a baby but I don't even know if I have the luxury of planning that. I pray that I can have kids. Does anyone else have this problem? or have some encouraging words?

Well, what do YOU want? Sounds like you would rather wait? Don't just start a family because of culture pressures or because your husband wants children right away. Also, see a doctor. Treatment is available.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

It might be a good idea to take a pregnancy test just to be sure. If you are pregnant, the sooner you know the better so you can start taking care of yourself. If you aren't, then you can feel relieved and not have to worry and start taking your pills again. I don't know much about your condition, but I do know that it can make it very difficult to get pregnant, but I don't think you are by any means sterile. There may be hormone treatments a fertility specialist can give you to help you get pregnant when the time is right.

I know I'm not infertile... (at least I hope I'm not). I might end up on hormone therapy. I just hope I don't end up like Octomom! Lol

I'm not ready right now, but I am looking to start a family within the year. So I just started thinking about this topic.

I think it is something you need to thoroughly discuss with your doctor before you start getting worried.

Take your time with your SO before you rush into children.

I wish you the best of luck and think you are probably still very young and vital....you'll be just fine :)

Hey Leyla, I have PCOS too. I found out in 2005 bcz of really really late cycles. June 2005 I was put on BC pills, 6 months later on January 3rd 2006 I got up to go to the bathroom and my right leg had a light pain. When I got up that day to go out, I was limping a bit. I noticed a small scratch like mark on the inner thigh. I went to a nurse friend and she said I needed to see a doc about it. I put it off. The next day the mark became longer and wider in length and the pain in my right leg was sharp and I was limping bad. I went to the doctor and he asked if I was on medicine so I told him BC pills for PCOS. I had a blood clot. A friend drove me to the emergency room. 2 weeks later I was told my options were 1) take a chance on taking blood thinners to see if it works, 2) immediate surgery or 3 do nothing which could result in death. I chose immediate surgery.

In April of 2006 I went to a hematologist to find out why I got a blood clot from BC pills. The pills helped my cycle but gave me the clot. They took numerous amounts of blood which I hate. I found out that I have Factor V Leidon Blood disorder. Basically I have a mutated gene that makes me prone to blood clots. So I can never be on BC pills again or anything even like it. And back then, I was told that if I ever got pregnant which would be hard for me, that I would have to be on blood thinners and monitored weekly. That is scary to me!

Im on Metformin for PCOS which has kept me regular and been great.

Now to the issue, ... I've always wanted a husband and children. Its been my hearts desire since I was 17. But honestly, Im a bit scared. In the back of my head I keep thinking what if I get another blood clot when Im pregnant. Will that kill me? How will I know I have a blood clot? Will the baby be ok? ect. Im really not ready yet emotionally and maybe not even physically to have a child. Also, about 6 years ago I had a close friend that died of a tubal pregnancy that is also in the back of my mind. I just need to keep praying about all of this but also I need to go back to the Endo doc (for PCOS)which is scheduled in August and find out something recent from the blood specialist.

So anytime my husband and I are together, I think in the back of my mind... did I get pregnant? One moment in my mind Im thinking I hope so, the other moment bcz of all of this stuff Im thinking I hope not. I do know that its always better to find out, so for healthsake you can be taken care of. Also, dont allow your cycles to be irregular bcz it can cause cancer in the lining of the uterus, or the cysts could be growing larger as well. Just dont take chances. -Tamara

Leyla,

First off, take a pg test just to be on the safe side. You would most likely have very obvious symptoms of pregnancy by now if you have missed two cycles. Nausea, fatigue, sore breasts, slight cramping and possible vomiting to name a few.

One of my gfs had/has PCOS. She got treatment for it for many years. While she was married to her first husband she miscarried once but had a really hard time conceiving. After treatment and a divorce (nothing to do with each other) she remarried. Within a week of marriage she conceived and now has a beautiful almost two year old. She wonders if it was the treatment that helped her or if perhaps her ex had a problem. Either way, she was successful in conceiving and birthing a child.

Good luck to you.

Oh and I agree with Nagi's comment. Don't feel the need to rush on children to appease your husband or his cultural "norms". Do it when it's right for you.

Thanks everyone :) Tamara that was very good information you gave me. I remember Metformin. I think I took it for a while but I don't remember why I stopped. Maybe there were some side effects. I need to talk to my doctor.

I am 33 and was diagnosed with PCOS at age 17. I have three beautiful children. It took me 4 years to get pregnant with my daughter but that was God's will to wait until I was a little older to have her. I took Clomid and a few injectable drugs and never got pregnant. I had a laparoscopic surgery and two months later became pregnant with her. We had bought a home and I was busy with that and my mind was at total ease not worrying about my cycle. My son, it took 9 months to get pregnant with him. Malek, he was our oopsy baby and not planned at all. It can happen and I have heard stories about the Metformin helping women. My doc always suggested keep the weight down and the stress low. I didn't have normal periods at all and sometimes I would have them that lasted a few weeks. Best of luck to you and pm me if you have any questions. Kind of an expert after living with this for 16 years.

Leyla,

Maybe I'm totally off here, but it sounds to me like maybe you're afraid of being pregnant now, but also afraid that you aren't (and can't ever be). I can understand that.

I agree with what others are saying - take a pregnancy test to know for sure. In the meantime, relax - it's very possible you're just back to your "normal".

As far as wanting to get pregnant in the future, I can understand that too. My ex pressured me into getting my "tubes tied". I gave in because he was such a &%)*%) when I got pregnant with our third, and I couldn't imagine going through that again (being told it was all my fault, having him become more distant, etc) and I never thought in a million years I'd end up divorced and remarried. I would love to have a baby with my sweetie, but am concerned it might not happen. The reversal is expensive, not always successful, and I'm getting older....

My sister has PCOS. She had a little trouble getting pregnant the first time, but then was surprised with the second! I don't know the success rate, but it probably helps to hear about success stories!

What ever happens, I wish you the best of luck. If you are pregnant, I hope it all works out. If you're not, I hope you can become pregnant if/when you would like to in the future!

Good luck!
