@Otto (I guess you're Otto): US Nutella is apparently made with peanut oil, while Canadian Nutella is made with palm oil. There's the difference. I never had the nutella with peanut oil so I don't know if it tastes different.

Ya...it's usually me here (Otto) - That's what Karin says - the peanut oil - I can't tell the difference because I never really eat it - not when I grew up there, nor here now. Good thing you can get the 'Canadian' version cause she loves the stuff. :luv:

So far - we've found that it is those 'little things' that make the difference. Little bits of home.

I have to get back to the Nutella, since I have missed that part....the best way to eat it: spread a thick layer of butter on Pumpernickel (black bread, the moist kind) and then top it off with a thick layer of Nutella (or even better: Nusspli). Man, I miss that!

I LOVE Nusspli! Way better than Nutella, imho.

If you live near a World Market store, their store brand of Nutella is really good and far less expensive.

Veronica, I'll pm when it gets closer to my departure date and hopefully we can meet up!

That's why I had to learn how to make tzatziki. ;)

My husband would like if I made labskaus and gruenkohl. I'm not sure I could live up to the PIL in that department so am not too hot on trying, but I'll probably end up doing it anyway. I think I could get the right meat from a German butcher here for gruenkohl. I think I will wait out the season before attempting either.

When we were in Victoria, BC a few weeks ago, my husband saw a sign for 30km/h in the city and sighed longingly. :P

Oh KitEEgirl!

This is Nutella

Wacken, what is gruenkohl? Green cabbage? I know rotkohl, but that's just red cabbage, right? Do you need a particular type of meat to cook with it?

Nah, it is kale. It is a traditional winter/early spring dish particularly most popular in northwestern Germany. You generally need three kinds of pork products to make this dish: Kassler, pinkelwurst, and bacon cubes. Like labskaus, its not really the most visually appealing dish on the planet. ;)

Anyone ever purchased any products from Stiglmeier Sausage Company?

My wife has on occasion bought gelbwurst from them. She says that although it's close to home made, it's still different.

Having tasted the wurst from her village butcher and from Stiglmeier I also agree with her statement. It's still good stuff though.

I've never ordered from them, but there is at least one German butcher here in town. I've just been too lazy to go down there and check it out.

My husband bought sandwich spread from the Meijer deli a few months ago. He said 'OMG it looks like sh!t, but tastes pretty much just like Fleischsalat! Nom nom nom.'

I have - was quite good!

We celebrated my husband's birthday with a little Oktoberfest last year and I ordered quite a bit of stuff from them. Good Brezels, too!

We have a German deli here called Hans' (srsly) that we occasionally go to for things. There's not too much P really misses from Germany though. At least not yet. We may be coming home with a suitcase full in August though!

If Veronica and I get together we'll definitely supply a picture :)

Thanks for the link to Stiglmeier Sausage, I am sure we'll order there soon. Just looking at the pictures made my mouth water!

We had a party last saturday and besides burgers, hotdogs and chips with salsa and guacamole, we also served homemade Obatzda with amber rye bread from the farmers' market here in Austin as well as a keg of Paulaner Hefeweizen and everybody just loved it!

Shoot for the moon - even if you miss, you'll land among the stars...
