I feel very fortunate, b/c my fiance will be moving here to the US while I'm on summer vacation. So, we'll be together a lot for the first couple of months. It is even better, b/c of the wedding and all in July... but what about after that? What can I do to help his transition to the US be as easy as possible? What helped all of you?

On another note... what made it easier to move into your SOs place? With the market and economy the way it is (especially in Michigan), we're just going to live here in my place. As much as we wanted to sell this place and buy one together, that's really not an option. I want his transition to MY house become OUR house. He hasn't had his own place, so we're not combing two complete households - he's always lived with a family member and only has his personal belongings (books, clothes, car, etc.).

Thanks for you insight & ideas! I've got a couple of months to get everything situated.

I can already tell your going to be a great wife, because you ARE asking for direction!! he is 1 lucky guy! here is what other VJ members (not myself) highly recommend to make it an easy transaction:

1)Keep fridge full of beer--Molsons or labatts, as long as it isn't light #######!

2) Put on you best lumber jack shirt, and give him a massage, humming the tune of a Log drivers Waltz: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ekqsHP9Sck

3) Light cleaning twice a week, full clean on Fridays

4) Get a season pass to NHL Centre ice!

5) Season tickets if you have a NHL team

6) best of all, every day just ask "Honey, what can I do to make you happy?" Good communication is vital in a relationship!!

7) If your sitting back and doing nothing, somethign is probably wrong, as you should be thinking on what you can do better. relationships take a lot of work,

Again, this isn't my advice, just stuff I have copied from posters such as krikit ,Trailmix, and Carla!!

5) Buy a jersey of his favorite NHL team!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I think the most important thing is - listening. It might be different for guys, but I just wanted to talk about my feelings and if I felt homesick get it off my chest. Cry if I felt like it and not feel embarrased. Just talking helps SO much. Also I brought alot of pictures and stuff, even though I moved into his place it is now our place because I have all my stuff.

Found this old thread on the topic: Link

I know there was a bunch in the Moving to America forum, and probably more in the Canada Forum too. I just found this link while I was doing a search for something completely different!

The most important thing for me was big hugs and listening. Which resulted in him going out of his way to find places to take me which would be most like home. Like finding a Whole Foods and a Polish deli and a British pub and a German bakery, and things like that. (I love to cook.... ergo the big emphasis on food. lol)

It was also extremely calming for me to go back and visit when I needed to. It actually helped me settle into my new home more, believe it or not.

LoL, lot of good that chant has done the Suns over the years

Well, I think you being a suns fan will be good, It seems all Canadians love the suns (in my experience). Something to do with a certain overhyped point guard or something

Be prepared for the days when he rants about how awful everything in America and how much better everything is in Canada. Don't take it personally and don't try apply logic. Just accept that it's really hard to adjust to a new life. Tell him that you love him and that things will get better.

Phil just holds me and lets me cry. He tells me that he loves me. When I've cried myself out, I think about how fortunate I am to have such a supportive husband.

OMG... you kill me!!! I'm a true fan... been one since I was a little girl. So, win or lose championship or no championship, I'm still a fan. However, it is a LOT more fun when they're winning!

So how long do you think it will be before we take Shaq back? He's definitely going to retire a champ, I mean a Laker
