Am I applying for a SSN card or for an actual number? Does the A number count as my ssn number if I am going to give it to my employer. I'm a little confused. :help:

I think the only people who care about your A number is the USCIS.

I am not sure what you mean by SSN card or actual number. Your SSN card will have a number on there which will be your actual number for social security.

I am not positive, but I think in order to work you need a SSN, or at least an EAD.

Your A # and your SSN are two totally different things.

Your A # is for Immigration purposes, and your SSN is for working and for social security. You will give your SSN to any future employers, not your A #.

You're a lot confused.

You will be registering with the SSA, you'll be given a number that will identify you for tax and benefit purposes (and for a lot of other purposes for which other government and private entities have adopted the SSN as their own ID number), and you'll be given a card with your name and number printed on it as evidence that you've registered with the SSA.

The A# is a number assigned to you by the USCIS so that they can keep track of the various petitions and applications that they process in the course of your immigration.

Yup, when you get your SSN number, they mail you a card. It's not like the SIN cards back home though, the SSN card is pretty much just a piece of squared paper, no plastic card at all lol.
