What is the chance of getting denied at the embassy?

Until the visa is issued and IN HAND, assume nothing, ever. BE THERE at the interview, even if you are on your deathbed. Make no plans to quit jobs, fly to the U.S., or whatever. These points cannot be emphasized enough!

Alright alright, thanks for letting me know. Should I wait as long as I can to go over to Japan then? I have to be back to the US by September 30th at the latest because classes start and I can only be there 90 days without an extension.

Also should she avoid sending things to the US ahead of her that she wants to keep?

Don't send anything she can't live without. My wife sent boxes of books and sent back a suitcase of clothes with all my visits, but nothing she couldn't do without

If everything goes according to plan I will be with her at the embassy, even if not we will have pictures together from like every day up until the interview so that shouldn't be a problem. Everything I've read about the embassy in Tokyo is that they ask pretty tame questions, even only one or two in some cases! So I'm not really worried, they have no reason to deny it.

Just as an example, off the wall. I know one couple that got approved in Kiev. Everything was perfect. In 3 days she would have her visa. The damn FedEx truck got ROBBED en route to deliverying her visa! They had to get a new passport and go back to the embassy for a new visa...total nightmare and it took weeks to resolve. And this after waiting longer than normal for the I-129f, AP at NVC for 7 weeks and then this. In Texas, we would have said it was "snakebit from the get go!"

Obviously I would agree with everyone else. Not a good idea to make any definite plans until the visa is in hand.

The fact that the decision rests with ONE person is, in my opinion, a flaw with the whole immigration system. You can have everything done correctly and in order but you might run into a CO who decides it's time to play god for 20 minutes. I'm sure most of them know how their decision can seriously impact lives of other people and I'm sure there are a few that get off on that idea.

I had my visa processed in tokyo and you are right, percentage of denial is very low...but you'll never know, i agree with everybody else, let her keep the job until she'll have the visa in hand. For as long as your relationship is strong, no need to worry. The consul only ask me 3 questions..i was at the embassy at 7:30 for an 8 o'clock appointment, i went out at 9:30...US embassy japan were very effecient and very organized.

If you ask questions that have nothing to do with the original topic, please search for the qeuestion first to see if it has been previously answered and if you can't find the answer, post a new topic in the correct forum. Call 603-334-0700 and provide your information.

To the OP, I have nothing more to add than what others have said. Go if you can, and be honest and PREPARED. Even if you know each other well, make sure she knows your parents' and siblings' names, where they live, what you do for work, etc. Do practice questions with her prior to the interview.

You can never know for sure what will happen. My case is proof of that. We had an average of $400 a month in phone calls for over a year hundreds of pictures and all the other things required. I couldn't be there because the interview was the same time I had to get my youngest off to college for the first time.

We continue our journey now more than 18 months after our 129f was mailed. We joke that I may be lolo ( queen of his village ) before he gets here and how to present that as evidence of a bonafide relationship.

But basically don't make any plans that would cost money ( tickets quitting jobs termination of housing) until the interview.

I was under the impression that once I get approved in the NOA2 that it's pretty much a guarantee to get the visa unless we lied about something or there's any reason that we know we should be denied. Is that right?

My fiancee doesn't want to put her 2-weeks notice in at her job until she has the visa in hand, but I'm trying to convince her to put it in as soon as we get the interview date. But she doesn't want to be left without a job in case she is denied... But there's virtually no chance of that happening, right?

-Low-risk country (Japan)

-My parents are my co-sponsor and are way above the poverty line, I'm a student (legitimate reason to have co-sponsor)

-No prior marriages, criminal history, or anything for either of us.

Once we get an interview date it's pretty much done, right?

I would advise waiting until the visa is in hand. If you have done eberything correctly (to be determined at the interview) you will get the visa. If not, there could be a delay until you get everything right. If it is a two week notice, what is the problem to wait two weeks? I really have to advise against changing anything until the visa is in hand or making travel arrangements prior to the visa in hand. I'm conservative like that

AGREE!!

I heard the same thing about the embassy at Nicaragua but we got drilled for info. The CO we had was not too nice and asked a lot of crazy questions yet everyone talked about how tame the embassy was regarding the interview. My advice is take lots of evidence. What seem to change her mind were the flights...I visited my Fiance a lot over the past year. She wanted everything we had.

Normally you get a letter from the NVC when they send it to the embassy.

You can always try to call them, but it's not listed in the voice system.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

WARNING: Phrases in this post may sound meaner than they were intended to be. Read the Adjudicator's Field Manual from USCIS

See **** interspersions.

BE THERE at the interview, even if you are on your deathbed.
While this is really good advice for some embassy's, it's not as necessary for others. For example, I've never heard of an Irish applicant being asked to have their FI there.

**** And what you've "heard" is reliable gospel? Please tell us the number of Irish beneficiaries who would have been refused a visa had their USC SOs not been there. Please cite the same for all other consulates worldwide.

...other people with interviews coming up, should check their local boards to see if request for the USC to attend are common.

**** And should interviewees relax and assume that they'll be issued a visa? Do not ever assume the outcome of ANY visa interview at ANY consulate! You may end up being right, but it's playing with fire.

It's also my understanding that in many cases, you're not allowed anywhere near the interview anyway. What good does it do except maybe to provide some emotional support to your fiancee' before the interview?

**** The emotional support isn't good? What if such support is the turning point that enables the interviewee to survive a challenging interview precisely because of extra confidence and the "ring of truth" in his/her voice? And what if his/her presentation of your passport to the CO (proving your attendance and adding to the valid appearance of the relationship) is the tipping point?

I wasn't at my fiancee's interview. To do so would have required 20 hours of flying (just one way), just so I could be there for a day, and then return.

**** This sentence speaks volumes.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

What are your chances of being denied at the embassy ? VERY HIGH . IF YOU DON'T HAVE A REAL RELATIONSHIP , THEY CAN SEE RIGHT THROUGH IT , and you will receive no visa , and your case will be sent to fraud . And petition will be sent back to USCIS , saying the visa is denied . So i would'nt do anything with your personal things you have , untill you are sure you received your visa ( in hand ). Just to be safe , NO . Your not pretty much done if you get interview date you are guarentee a visa . You will only get your visa , if you can prove you both have a guiniun relationship . And in no way is it easy to prove it , it is going to be hard for your fiancee in the interview . My advice is too help her the best you can , by going to the interview with her . Or if you can't make it too her interview . Go through the interview with her , write statements of your relationship with her so the CO can read it at the interview . And this did somewhat help us . With alot of the questions , and it helped her in the interview .
