My Russian wife is going back to Russia soon. Will US mobile phones work in Russia? What about recharging battery issues. Can you "convert" a us mobile phone to work in Russian language?

I was especially interested in Blackberry phones. What are the technical issues?

Blackberries don't have cyrillic. I know that MTS has experimented with blackberries, though, so that may change soon.

If you have T-mobile or AT&T, you can get a special international plan for blackberries. Calling will be expensive, though. Like 5$ a minute. For T-Mobile I paid 20$ a month for email, and then you can use the internet, roaming, for 15$ a MB of data transfer. If you get the code from your provider to unlock your phone (they will do this if you have had the phone for 6+ months, usually), you can buy a Russian sim card and stick it in your phone.

If you have verizon or sprint, your phone WILL NOT work in Russia.

And you can charge American phones with an outlet converter.

You need a tri-band or quad-band GSM phone. A standard dual band US GSM phone (ATT or T-mobile) that does not have the 900 or 1800 band will not work.

Every phone I have had could be charged on either voltage. Bring your plug adapter.

Unlock your phone (get the codes online or from your provider) so that you can by a SIM card over there. You will have a local number and be able to make phone calls on the standard pay per minute fee. I have had good luck with Beeline and MTS.

Some phones are Russian language ready. Check your manual to see if it is, and how to change it.

All tmobile/at&t blackberries have the correct bands.

You can also get a cheap nokia.

I don't know anything about blackberries, but I know that cheap US Nokias are often only dual band. I used a tri-band Nokia (with 1800 mhz band) for years going Russia and it worked almost everywhere. It wouldn't work in the Moscow Metro, however, because they were using 900 mhz repeaters there.

Oh, no, I didn't mean buy a US Nokia. The OP specifically asked about blackberries, and I know that the GSM ones all work in Russia. I was suggesting that it might be easier for the OP's wife to buy one of the cheap Nokias in Russia, and then pay the 20$ for the international email service on the Blackberry from tmobile or at&t. This way she can have Russian texting and also immediate access to email.
