I applied for my AOS in Dec, 2008 and am going to apply for a teaching program in a university, CA.

However, I don't have SSN and am confused where and how to apply for it.

Can someone help me with it? It is urgent because the dead line is next week. Help!!!!!!!!!

You can apply at your local SS office. IF you will change your name with marriage (or have) and do not have your green card yet, then apply for the SS card in your MAIDEN name (exactly as on your passport) after you receive your green card you can go back and change the name. If you try to change your name before receiving the green card your SSN will be delayed for weeks. With normal processing, you can call the SS office the next day and get your number, but it will be a week for the card to arrive.

Thank you very much Gary.

Currently, I am still in visitor Visa and don't receive EAD yet. Do you think I am eligible to apply for SSN?

I am not familiar with the visitor visa and if you can get an SSN. Sorry, I made the assumption it was a K-1.

You are not eligible for a SSC or even SSN , because you are not or going to be a perminant resident of the USA . Or you are authorised to work in the usa by DHS with an EAD.

Nothing requires you to change your name after marrying, but you will need to work and file taxes using that same name. Plus most states verify the name used on the driver's license application against the SSN record, so you probably will need to use the name for that too.

Do I need to change my maiden name to my married name on my social security card for us to file jointly?

http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq/0,,id=199564,00.html

You can still file Married Filing Jointly without changing your name with the Social Security Administration.

-- Make sure that the name shown on your Social Security card matches the name you use on your tax return.

-- If you haven’t changed your name with Social Security you will need to show your maiden name on the tax return instead of your married name.

How can I make sure that the employee's SSN and name given to me are correct?

http://employer-ssa.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/e...hp?p_faqid=1566

You should record the name and SSN shown on the card in your business' personnel and payroll records that will be used to prepare W-2 reports.

If the employee indicates he or she prefers to use a different name for employment purposes, advise the employee that you must use the name as it currently appears on the card.
