SSN before AOS Complete - Maiden name only?

Thanks - and I wrote them at the address you PMed me too. One way or another it will eventually work out. Will emailing them actually change the process if the on-site worker decided to submit in maiden name? She even said that her supervisor would sign off on the switch from the application name (married name) and Vika need do nothing.

You said they would not allow her to apply with her maiden name, so what are you talking about the supervisor signing off on the name change?

They ran the computer identity check using her married name and said that there was a "name discrepancy". The clerk then said she would send off to Homeland Security, but if they couldn't verify her that way, the supervisor would sign off on a change in the application to her maiden name w/o Vika doing anything. So she will get a card with her maiden name apparently, regardless of the name on the app.

I had a call from Social Security today, in response to the email. Vika's name has been corrected in the system, but Homeland Security is still responding that they have no record of her in their system. They may need to do a manual search of some kind I am told. The process will work, but apparently if her K-1 has expired there will be no SSN until a green card is issued. Another wrinkle I guess - this gets curiouser and curiouser all the time :P

So why do some names not get into the SAVE database as quickly as Gary keeps reminding us? Do some POEs just pile up the work and get around to entering their immigrants only on "Tuesdays" or leave it for the night shift? Why do some get skipped? It that the POE guy's fault because they didn't complete their data entry job or the packet fell behind the desk? Or maybe he sent the packet off and forgot to do his data entry?

From what I understand the part of the I-94 that they keep gets sent to a contractor I believe in Kentucky that keys it into the information. So it could be their workload at the time or the POE may send them once a week, where some send them every day.

  • 2 months later...

I just wanted to close this one out. After two more visits to the SS office here in town and a three week wait, Vika did in fact get her SSN in the mail today. Months after our initial application, but better late than never.
