I have a few questions about the interview which is still a good ways down the road. I just want to be prepared and ask questions early.

My fiancee will be interviewed in Tokyo and to be honest I am a little nervous because she gets very nervous and is also very shy. I have been reading about how they ask a range of questions which seem simple enough. Asking about our history, plans for living and marriage.

I hate to seem so ignorant on the subject, but honestly I do not know what to expect. Some topics say the interviewers are nice, which I hope is the case for her. The real question is this, should I be going with her to the interview? I have read some people brought their significant other and they were not allowed in the interview room. Is that true? Do most couples bring their fiance(e)'s? I would love to be there obviously, but right now it is a bit too early to say I can definitely go. If most people do bring their fiance(e) and it is highly recommended I will definitely fly to Japan to be there.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My fiancee just had her interview this morning and I wasn't even allowed in the building. Of course this is Bangkok I'm talking about and not Tokyo. But just remember your miles may very and any advice you get could be helpful or worthless depending on the mood of the Interviewer.

I went to our interview and recommend it if you can. Consulates vary on how they handle this, most will allow the USC inside at the very least. I was allowed to go up to the interview window with Alla. Check with the Tokyo consulate on their policy. At the very least it gives morale support and allows you one last look at all the documents to make sure everything is correct. With the exception of a few consulates that seem just unreasonable, the interview questions are of the type that a couple in a legitimate relationship should find easy to answer

Blunt answer: Absolutely go there.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Check out the embassy reviews here on VJ. From what I read scanning through the Tokyo comments it seems to be a positive experience.

Present or not, preparation is the key to dealing with any relationship questions. If she knows what a fiancee would know about you and you have a real relationship, she should be able to answer any questions with confidence and accuracy.

Thank you for your feedback everyone. I am not really worried about her answering the questions, we know each other very well. I really just wanted to know if me being there would make or break an interview. She does get nervous but either way I feel confident about everything.

Thank you.
