My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

I rarely if ever use an ATM machine...just never need to have a lot of cash on hand when almost everyone accepts a debit/credit card.

When I need some cash, I'll usually go through the checkout line at the local grocery store...most of them will let you get up to $100 cash back.

They have found skimmers on the readers inside supermarkets too.

The systems employed by Stop & Shop are 12 years old, says Grant Drummond, marketing head of Ingenico, which made the swipe-box systems for the supermarket chain. Ingenico stopped making those systems in 2002, and the data thieves at Stop & Shop most likely wouldn't have been able to pull off their caper with Ingenico's newer systems, Drummond says.

IMO, your best defense is to keep a careful eye on your bank transactions and notify your bank immediately if you see anything you can't identify as a transaction you made. In most cases, you are not financially responsible for unauthorized purchases.

Use a credit card instead of a debit card. There are no protections on debit cards, other than your PIN, so if someone discovers that, they could withdraw a ton of money without you realizing it. Credit cards, on the other hand, remove most (and sometimes all) of the liability from the card holder. This is why credit card companies will temporarily suspend a card if they think too many high charges have been made or spending habits seem a little out of whack.
