I'm sorry for your loss, as well. I know how difficult it can be to lose a family member to cancer.

My mother passed away in 2005 from non-small cell lung cancer at the age of 52. I realize she lived longer than your brother-in-law, but 52 is still rather young to die. We didn't catch her cancer until it had reached Stage 4 and had come a death sentence. She lived approximately six months more after her initial diagnosis.

While your husband may never fully get over his brother dying, the pain will lessen with time. I know that sounds extremely cliched, but it's true. The best advice I can give you is "keep his mind preoccupied." In other words, don't let him dwell on it. That doesn't mean he can't grieve, but the more time he has to think it over, the more depressed he will probably become. I know this from personal experience.
