ok so I just asked and she said that most and pediatricians already recommend nutrition counseling to pregnant women or families with young children. she also said that the WIC program where they get money to help with food for their kids makes you do nutrition counseling before they put you on the program. they teach you what things you can feed your children at a lower cost and still healthy. she said she thinks they offer these classes free of charge once a month too.

It's great that these things are already being offered, at least in some parts of the country (if not all, I have no idea) Obviously, for there to be such a large incidence of obese children something still isn't working though. :( I expect part of the problem is that people are not aware that what they are doing is wrong or bad. If something is recommended but you consider for whatever reason that you are not part of the problem, that your kid is merely pudgy or carrying baby fat that it doesn't apply to you personally you probably will not enter a program.

I was not offered anything like that when I was pregnant - just the don't drink alcohol and soft cheese blah blah blah.

My personal feeling is that there are certainly cases of neglect that lead to obesity but I am still rather wary of suggesting that the 20% incidence of obesity translates to 20% of parents being disinterested in their kid's welfare.

Last year I worked at CVS for a couple months while I was in the US,

One day I was out on the floor straightening up the shelves and this 7ish year old little boy asked his mom if he could get a little bag of dried apples that we sold. The mom looked at the bag and said "Ewwwwww.....no. Go get a candy bar or something!"

I wanted to cry.

Here's another thing that happened at CVS all of the time. At the CVS I worked at, we accepted food stamps. I can understand why we accepted food stamps because we sold things like milk, bread, eggs, and umm....that's all I got on the healthy food list! But out of all of the people that used food stamps to buy their food at CVS, I cannot remember more than 3 times where they were buying "healthy food". The majority of the time it was a 10-15 year old kid using their parents food stamps to buy $20-30 worth of Doritos, cheese dip, and other totally disgusting (for your health!) junk food.

This always pissed me off. I agree with other posters that the system should be reworked so that parents cannot buy things like doritos using their food stamps!

Oh...I thought food stamps would only pay for certain things? I had a kinda/sorta friend who always tried to talk me into letting her buy my groceries with her kids food stamp money and me give her the cash. The big word there is HAD. I thought that was so f*cked up.

I think the problem is that the government will not risk the ire of the food industry lobbies. This stuff, the chips and fake cheese and 'highfructosecornsyrupfilled junk cake/cereal whatever the hell' makes millions for the companies that make them, and being America making millions is more important than the welfare of the population. "The People" do not want regulation and yet they want people to magically know not to eat things that the companies spend millions on advertising trying to persuade us, successfully is a reasonable supplement to our normal diet. So, even though it makes sense to restrict food stamps to real food, it will never happen.

Wasn't it President Regan who said that the ketchup packs that you are given in your lunch at school counted as a vegetable?

Yup, that was him.

Nice!

At least they gave you the ketchup though - in UK primary schools the kids used to get free milk in the middle of the day. Thatcher took it away.
