They break my heart dude. They really do.

Those pics are sad but they also made me laugh. They look so clueless and that one kid has on sumo diaper or something

Which proves one of my points. Morbidly obese children garner sympathy, but ALSO a lot of ####### from folks, and certainly from their classmates.

The link between being obese (however that is determined -- not answered by the article) as a preschooler and obese as an adult isn't fully determined. (We know it seems to be true in older kids.) Remember, obese doesn't mean "obviously disgustingly fat", just "above a certain threshold." (People carry weight differently.) If they're using something like BMI on a 3 foot tall kid, aren't we talking a difference of only a few pounds? And this is on the assumption that BMI works the same in kids, and there's reason to be skeptical of that.

From my nutrition class, I seem to remember that something like 20% of obese preschool to k aged kids end up obese as adults. But obese pre-k kids are so "new" that the study(s?) don't have the legitimacy of many other studies to back 'em up.

maybe instead of taking the kids from their families, they should give the parents lessons on proper nutrition etc

I don't think taking the kids out of the homes would help much.. it might make matters worse.....

I was fat when I was little. My mom says my dad fed my bologna and made me fat  My dad just laughs and says she's wrong. I blame him for the fatness genes. Damn him and the f*cking bologna!

Anyways, people were never mean to me. Everyone was always nice to me and I had tons of friends. I eventually grew out of it, back into it, and now I'm in the out of it stage again  I always give the bologna an evil look if I see it at the grocery store :P

soooo nutrition classes are a must during pregnancy. as a doctor I will start recommending nutrition classes to pregnant women. I will start a revolution!

actually I'm going to ask my mom about this since she's an ob/gyn. hmmm...

It's funny......... I was out to lunch with a pregnant friend who decided to order a virgin mary and actually got $hit from a stranger at the other table who assumed it was alcoholic.....completely ignoring the nearly 250 pound 8 year old at another table shovelling fries in his face.

ok so I just asked and she said that most and pediatricians already recommend nutrition counseling to pregnant women or families with young children. she also said that the WIC program where they get money to help with food for their kids makes you do nutrition counseling before they put you on the program. they teach you what things you can feed your children at a lower cost and still healthy. she said she thinks they offer these classes free of charge once a month too.

CHICAGO - A striking new study says almost 1 in 5 American 4-year-olds is obese, and the rate is alarmingly higher among American Indian children, with nearly a third of them obese.

Too much curry? :P

I want to note that "American Indians" refers to Native Americans, and not those originating from India.

(To quote a popular US joke: "Casino version, not Gas Station.")

Catie

he knows. it was a joke :) that's why there was the :P

Just one man opinion but I think the main reason why, all the nutritional education in the world

will have almost no effect on the wide spread problem because MOST parents that would have an obese child are terminally "Indulgent", They can not tell the kid no... at least when it comes to food.

Another case might be the parent who lifestyle is such that they are eating to-go food 5 nights a week.

When I was a kid the only thing to drink was milk or orange juice, rarely did we drink Soda.

My mom just never bought snacks except apples and banana's type stuff.

We did have the sugar cereal though.

I know without a doubt if she did bring all those fattening food in the door, I would have been fat.

While I would be against the Govt telling people what to eat in general, I do strongly believe the food stamp program needs to be reworked so that the worst offending products are axed from being purchased on the public dollar.

If 1 in 5 small children are obese in the population as a whole, I shutter to think what the number would be for just Food-stamp kids.

come on Caladan, you know what we are talking about. And yes, if you are feeding your kids ####### all the time and not fostering a healthy lifestyle, you are taking away years from them, in the name of Froot-Loops, they should be taken where they have a fighting chance . Bad parenting. I might get slammed, but whomever is raising these kids is doing a ####### job, unless there is some undiagnosed (or diagnosed) disorder that could possibly be treated by a physician.

The kids in your picture are not merely 'obese.' Look, for an adult, BMI 31 is obese. For someone my height, that's about 181 pounds; hefty, but not the type of picture that would accompany the story in the media (they usually shoot for morbidly obese). Whatever the equivalent of that is in a kid, it's much slimmer than the pics you just posted.

I am for good nutrition, but I think it's important to keep perspective about the obesity epidemic, especially when it's accompanied by little information about how the number was determined. Especially since we're apparently talking about taking 20% of kids away from their parents.
