I don't believe that 1/5 of parents today simply don't care about their children and their health. I think there are probably many factors that play a part though and ensuring all kids understand nutrition is just part of the puzzle. At one time, it was not possible to buy 'food' that wasn't nutritious. It is really not surprising that now we have these non food foods that we have to make an effort to ensure everyone understands what they actually are, and how little of it is required - if any.

besides it's not just food, it's the fact that they let them become couch potatoes and don't enroll them in a sport.

People can have a diet full of fat but if they burn them by exercising before it actually becomes love handles, they would never ever become walking meat balls

You can be fit and still have bad nutrition, especially when you are young but that's not the same thing of course. As I said, I am sure there are many contributory factors. One factor is that kids don't get to play outside unsupervised. Have you any idea how restrictive that is in terms of getting enough exercise? I didn't ever play organized sport as a kid, but I was never fat because I played outside all the time, roaming for miles on foot or on a bicycle. Kid's just can't do that sort of thing a lot of the time any more. Just another factor.

Let me put it this way: it is NOT the kids' fault; when they have negligent idiots for parents who let them eat cr@p; or feed it to them; or eat it with them and hence ** them up. If I had it my way, obese children would be removed from "home" and placed in healthier environments; just like children of active addicts. Because certainly, it is not in the best interest of any child being fed Mac'n'cheese + CapriSun; sit with a joystick 6 hours a day and never see the sunlight.

No, that's true it is not the kids fault but how would you monitor unacceptable eating patterns? How would you foster/adopt out 1/5 of the country's kids? It's hard enough getting foster carers for those that are at risk from more 'serious' problems like physical/sexual abuse or what not let alone trying to monitor ignorance.

It's easier and more sensible to educate those parents that you can get to than to put all those kids in care - not to mention the psychological damage blah blah blah.
