Yeah, it's his special dessert-eating spoon. All sorbets, ice creams, custards, yogurts and apparently fools need to be eaten with it. It's the sugar spoon from the hostess set in our silverware, and it's scalloped. Kind of like this:

My ex-husband had a special "stripey knife" that he had actually won in a game of Monopoly against his brother and sister. He used it for cheese at home, and always brought it with him when we went to visit his family in Suffolk so he could taunt them with the stripey knife. Is there something about British men and attachment to silverware?

I find several things funny online.

I sort of smile at quite a few things.

I had a good long chuckle at this! (might have been an actual laugh, except that I am at work) Thanks. :)

Hit save on the edit too quick before I remembered this...

In LA there's actually a sainsbury's owned by a brit couple/family from what I've heard on good authority from a friend, a bit more expensive than regular supermarket/stores but worth it for the home comforts, I know they have a wide selection of sweets and sandwiches, and soft drinks, will have to poke Paul to go down there on our next errand days ;)

how is it that I have lived her 3 1/2 years not known that this exists? Thanks DL!

I completely concur on the Ruben sandwich. I (L) it!

One of the first times G came to see me here, he ordered a Ruben because I had one the day before. One bite and he spit it out. We ended up trading lunches that day.

Burritos are yummy too. As is most Mexican Tex/Mex food.

I am not a fan of the reuben, most because i hate corned beef. Though I loves me a pastrami sandwich which is also not that common in the UK, like American deli counter stuff generally

good mexican food is not something you find easily in britain

I had exactly one satisfactory Mexican meal in Britain in twelve years, at a Mexican restaurant actually run by Mexicans. When I met the owner, we joked about feeling like the only Mexicans in London. She packed me off with two huge bags of corn tortillas, for which we were grateful on a recurring basis over the next 3 months.

The lack of corn tortillas over there is a national shame.

my year in glasgow was a sad year for the part of my heart that is in love with mexican food. we did make do. we learned to make a lot of things at home. jamie makes very good beans now. yum! and i am now able to make a pretty decent salsa (and i grow the ingredients in my garden!) and, though we did not discover it soon enough, we did visit the mexican grocery/deli on the great western road several times.

we had a particulary bad meal in stirling, but it was entertaining. i asked for hot sauce when our meal came and the waitress was puzzled. she returned after a minute with the kitchen's mini-vat of hot sauce and deposited it at the table. <3 (it wasnt really hot. just red.)

and damian, are you posting these recommendations as you discover them? is this a meal by meal account of your days in the us? did you have a reuben for lunch and a steak with a-1 sauce for dinner? : D

I'm listing them as I discover and/or remember them. And I remember ruebens and A1 from my time out here before :).

And how can I possibly not list this little gem: RANCH DRESSING!!!!!!!!!! :star: I remember an episode of The Simpsons where Homer fantasises that he's a Sheikh in a harem. He claps his hands and orders one of his ladies to bring him his ranch dressing hose! I want a ranch dressing hose. It's amazing.

I second the ranch dressing, Paul likes it too but neither of us are fond of some brands overpowering garlic aftertaste/breath LOL

and as pringles are trans fat free here, I'll happily gobble down the ranch bacon flavour all night long if allowed to hehe

on the sandwich note, cant beat a good Monte cristo! my fav to have at disneyland in the New Orleans french quarter... yum!

img_19501.jpg

very nommable but we end up sharing one order or pay the price, and of course have fun trying not to get covered in powdered sugar

And Marm, poked mumsy she's going to write out her recipe for the pasties for me in a few days... they went powerboating/classes over the weekend so is to knackered to look for her handwritten recipe book, (powerboating? alright for some eh?) will post it as soon as she sends me it, Im plannning on making Paul and I the lamb and mint ones she makes, I cant be left in a room alone with those though, something about lamb, mint and green potatoes (from the mint) that is just irresistible when wrapped up in nice warm pastry :D

and, though we did not discover it soon enough, we did visit the mexican grocery/deli on the great western road several times.

But do they sell corn tortillas? Noooooo!!! They sell masa harina, but man, I don't have the time to make my own tortillas. What I could never figure out is why there were flour tortillas for sale everywhere, but what were passed off as corn tortillas were like flat, round cornbread, really sweet and totally not the genuine article. Couldn't make enchiladas, tostadas, etc etc.

Infidels! Heathens! God bless America and corn tortillas.
