And Marm, poked mumsy she's going to write out her recipe for the pasties for me in a few days... they went powerboating/classes over the weekend so is to knackered to look for her handwritten recipe book, (powerboating? alright for some eh?) will post it as soon as she sends me it, Im plannning on making Paul and I the lamb and mint ones she makes, I cant be left in a room alone with those though, something about lamb, mint and green potatoes (from the mint) that is just irresistible when wrapped up in nice warm pastry :D

Awesome! Can't wait to try out the recipe once you put it up! I am sure my dear fiance will be very pleased  ...if it turns out the way it is supposed to that is!

my year in glasgow was a sad year for the part of my heart that is in love with mexican food. we did make do. we learned to make a lot of things at home. jamie makes very good beans now. yum! and i am now able to make a pretty decent salsa (and i grow the ingredients in my garden!) and, though we did not discover it soon enough, we did visit the mexican grocery/deli on the great western road several times.

we had a particulary bad meal in stirling, but it was entertaining. i asked for hot sauce when our meal came and the waitress was puzzled. she returned after a minute with the kitchen's mini-vat of hot sauce and deposited it at the table. <3 (it wasnt really hot. just red.)

and damian, are you posting these recommendations as you discover them? is this a meal by meal account of your days in the us? did you have a reuben for lunch and a steak with a-1 sauce for dinner? : D

I've been to that terrible Mexican place in Stirling....how interesting was their rice?

Theres a pretty good Mexican place in Edinburgh on Coxburn(sp?) St. Although I'm with you all that American does Mexican food well!

Oh, and root beer! (Jon can't get enough!)

Stu seems to really like sloppy joe sandwiches and we found that the Heinz sloppy joe sauce doesn't have HFCS in it (and tastes better). He likes those along with tater tots (like little hash browns).

After reading this thread, we decided to try the Pims cookie/cakes to see if they were anything like jaffa cakes. Stu says they're a different size, but the taste and texture is almost exactly the same. I've never had a real Jaffa cake, so I have to take his word for it :P

I had exactly one satisfactory Mexican meal in Britain in twelve years, at a Mexican restaurant actually run by Mexicans. When I met the owner, we joked about feeling like the only Mexicans in London. She packed me off with two huge bags of corn tortillas, for which we were grateful on a recurring basis over the next 3 months.

The lack of corn tortillas over there is a national shame.

Was this place in Mortlake? That was the only place I found - recommended by an Angeleno, so I knew I could trust it.

I have been told there is a new place in London that is "authentic" though they spell Oaxaca phonetically so I'm not so sure

It was a place called Mestizo, near Warren Street tube, just where TCR turns into the Hampstead Road. I did hear about the Mortlake place, but that was always a real trek to get to so I never went. Haven't head about the Oaxaca place. I can only imagine it is spelled Wahaca...

I had to giggle about you being "trained on tea"!! His mother does nearly everything in the kitchen, so I sort of try to make myself small and out of the way, but ready to help if she ever asks (she hasn't). However, it seems like everyone makes tea - and when they want tea, they ask if anyone else wants tea, and make a whole pot....

Ah, but stay tuned as I try to make a Yorkshire Pudding for the Sunday roast. Should be a comedy laugh riot ending in a phone call to our neighborhood Round Table Pizza. Good thing John likes their Maui Zowie!!

Wahaca is good, it is run and owned by the girl who won Master Chef a few years back

Not been to Mestizo yet, but a friend of mine has reccomended it as being very authentic and she is a chef so will give it a try before I leave for Texas

ohh thanks for the heads up, may have to go find some, must have covered in honey num num num

on the food note, I found the Crumpets in Trader Joes, they're err not bad just not like the ones we get back home, not as fluffy or thick and not hmm holey? in the top so have to stab them with a knife too make biggeer holes for butter/jam to seep into the middle.... or if you're weird like me, I like mine with marmite on top (I knew shoving the biggest jar of marmite into my suitcase before we left was a good idea, cant even remember how much it was in Sainsburys but the jars not even as big as the one I have go up to around 20$ for a piddley little jar, I think Im going to stuff my second suitcase with more jars if we do get to go back in August ;)
