A quick food recommendation

OK, we've seen a lot of threadds pissing and moaning about certain ####### U.S. food products, so I thought it was only fair to mention a really good one I've found.

When I was here last time, 'er indoors bought this horrible square, cube like butter that tasted like ######. I was thinking about little things I was gonna miss when I got over here, and one of those things was my spreadable Lurpack - delicious. Well fear not, Lurpack lovers, because I've found a cracking bit of spreadable butter that actually might be even tastier (I ###### you not). It's called Land Lakes Sweet Cream Spreadable Butter, and it's bloody lovely - highly recommended.

Any other Brits who find very tasty substitutes for our norms please post 'em here!!

beware of ovaltine though, it tastes nothing like the uk one.

What is it with American butter? It's truly awful. I keep telling my fiancée "just wait until you try some Irish butter".

I'll definitely check out your recommendation when I get over there. Apparently you can get Kerrygold butter in some places, so that might be worth keeping an eye out for.

We got some Pepperidge Farm Orange Milano Cookies from Target, which are a little tiny bit like Jaffa Cakes.

They filled a Jaffa Cake shaped hole anyway the last time I was there.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, Walmart sell Twinings English Breakfast and Irish Breakfast tea, which are the best cups of tea I was able to find.

i haven't noticed the problem with butter as much, it's the bread i can't stand! i miss granary bread. all the stuff here tastes like sugary polystyrene. does anyone have any good bread recommendations?

I think it's one of those things where you have to find a bakery in your area. There are a couple in Arizona - Beyond Bread in Tucson is my favorite, and mother and I will use just about any excuse to get us the 90 miles down there to get some.

I have been meaning to try out Simply Bread here in Phoenix, (I have been told they supply the top restaurants) but I haven't gotten around to it. Their website claims "real European" breads made there. Maybe when Nik is over it will be on our weekly grocery route.

What do you think of Wildflower? www.wildflowerbread.com One in your area? I haven't been very many times, but they seem to have a wide selection of baked-on-site kinds of things.

We use the Land O Lakes Butter Damian mentioned. But we do buy Kerrygold on occasion.

Gary isnt really too fussy with what he eats, since he's been here, he actually has stopped drinking tea. We are hooked on Dunkin Donuts coffee I'd say he is much more adventurous with trying new foods, then he would have been back home.

ive seen squash in the chain grocery stores near me. its in the 'british/irish foods section/shelf'.

i wonder if there's a british grocery store in new york city? i think there must be, seems like in big cities everything exists in one shape or another. im curious to try a salt & battery, which is a british chippie in the city.

Yes, become a baker! I have started making my own bread and I know it dont contain no friggin HFCS! Tastes a lot better too! That Sara Lee bread just aint bread!!!

I've started making my own bread too. Nothing beats home-made! I use a recipe from the BBC recipe archives, and not a granule of sugar or a drop of HFCS in it. Bliss.

Pim's might be able to serve as a substitute for Jaffa cakes ... I dunno, as I've never had the latter. They make them in orange and raspberry, and you can find them in just about any supermarket in the U.S. Anyway, I am addicted to them.

This is an awesome thread. I'll be sure to keep Land O Lakes in the fridge for John. As for bread, he loves the King's Hawaiian bread I use for his ham sandwiches, so I don't have to worry about that. And he's got me trained on tea . One of the first things he ever gave me was an electric kettle from Sainsbury's, so we are clear for launch.

Stu isn't too picky about the food here, but we've found British butters and cheeses at our local co-op (along with chocolate digestives).

As for bread with HFCS, we try and avoid it as much as possible (it's in almost EVERYTHING though). We've found one bread that's ok and doesn't have it. Brownberry's I think? It's not the best, but it's ok. I really like the stuff from the bakery.

Cheese: Nick has settled on the Boar's Head Black Wax aged cheddar. He says it's mediocre but better than most. A really nice man at the grocery store deli opened every pack of cheddar they had once (even the pre-packaged ones small ones) for a taste test.
