"A Mississauga woman says she'll be the victim of an honour killing by her estranged husband, a Muslim extremist, when she's deported to Pakistan at the end of the month. Roohi Tabassum, 44, says Faisal Javed, a businessman and Sunni community leader, will be waiting for her in their native Pakistan when she's sent back on April 28.

She has to report to officials at Pearson airport on that date for the trip.

Tabassum said she's received written threats from Javed, who's outraged she's employed in a Mississauga beauty salon where she styles the hair of women and men....."

I hope they let her stay to avoid her death or worse still deport her elsewhere if its a must that she leaves Canada.

The whole point of giving someone asylum is to protect them from government or systemic persecution. However it seems standard operating proceedure that whenever someone overstays a visa or illegally immigrates and gets caught and is ordered deported, this seems to be a very common last ditch ploy these people use to buy time or attempt to win sympathy. Unfortunately the courts and government officials have to wade through the bullshit to determine truth from fiction. Really...as if Americans and Canucks don't get threatened or murdered in the USA or Canada? It happens every day here too. Disgruntled spouses threatening their spouses.

Most of these types of cases that hit the news here remind me of this:

Let me stay or I die. I'm not so sure that Americans or Canadians should be forced to take on self inflicted guilt over situations they do not control or even know the eventual outcome of. That's just my opinion.

It might be spurious, but then it might not. The courts are obligated to investigate the truthfulness of such claims and surely granting someone asylum is preferable to their being murdered.

And lets face it - honor killings are rather more likely to take place in Pakistan than here...

That's what I was thinking.

I can't remember when, but I remember there were these two murderers killing adults and kids then fled to Canada to hide. The USA found them and Canada refused to hand them over because they would have been sentenced to death.

education in the wahibi sect style islam and exclusion of other education is the root of the problem. this is the education given to about 20-50% of young men in afghanistan and pakistan for the last 25 years. the funding comes from saudi, and the home states accept it because they can't afford not to. men come out of these programs with little useful skill and an expectation that the world is their oyster into an economy that gives them no opportunity to be productive and develop self esteem based upon accomplishment. as a result, they seek to express some power, in some way, even if it is as base as the taking of another's life "to restore honor under the rules of islam".
