So what would be the reaction if this were being done under the Bush administration?

Well the Bush administration created a precedent for instituting emergency powers to combat terrorism. Its no surprise really that the Obama administration is following in their tracks.

That said I would think anyone who supported the PATRIOT Act and warrantless wiretaps should really have no problem with this.

Shutting down the Internet would make Obama the most hated president (and individual) in the U.S., if not the entire world.

He's already off to a great start ! Doesn't anyone teach him appropriate cultural etiquette? This fits right in with his agenda for Socialism...No big surprise! :help:

I wonder why none of the folks who were so gung ho about the patriot act and warrantless wiretapping aren't coming out to defend this.

As Scott said earlier (though doubtless for a different reason), what would be the reaction if it were bush doing this?

Necessary national security measure or grotesque infringement on civil rights?

What's really disturbing is the reality of microchips implanted in babies, (in the name of "safety" of course) if we don't fight against it and other losses of our civil liberties regardless of administration.

This is the people's cause that transcends party lines, It's a sad day in America to see this so-called democracy we live in eroding before our eyes

Considering the number of children abducted every day, the idea behind implanting a microchip into babies and young children certainly has some merit. Having said that, however, I could see how some civil liberty issues might arise.

The "reality of microchips implanted in babies?"

News to me.

Where is this happening?

It sounds like Science Fiction, but will inevitably become reality after the National ID cards replace our drivers licenses. This was supposed to occur last year and was pushed back as people become more aware and are objecting. If we refuse the card, then what? our driving privileges are revoked, too?

We need to educate ourselves and open our eyes to what the gov't is doing. What really gets me is so many troops dying overseas in the name of freedom, yet right here at home our rights are being yanked out from under us !

Thus came the national id card which is micro chipped and the new digitized US passports that are microchiped. They might as well put a microchip in everyone's cell phone to know where they are at all time. And then there are states like like Montana, Idaho, ect out here in the West that are fighting the National ID card saying what are you going to do government when we don't want our ID's chipped and the government chirps back "Then you can't fly" and the state governors chirp back B.S. our state ID's are valid and you're not gonna let us not fly. blah blah blah...the story goes on.

We've had that for years though.

They can already find your location via cell-phone - no need to install tracking software, the thing emits a microwave signal that can be tracked (the phone doesn't work without that).

You can be tracked through your ATM card too - but that's been possible for over 25yrs.

Privacy is an illusion. Almost any information you give to a government agency is freely distibuted. Property tax, dmv files, voter registrations, arrest records, and more, are all public records.

Which is why barrier laws that safeguard how that information can be accessed and used - are so important, and why things like the PATRIOT Act should be opposed.

All those things I listed are available right now to any citizen for a fee paid to the agency, as well as advertising companies, and wacko fringe groups.
