Pentagon spends $100 million to fix cyber attacks

By LOLITA C. BALDOR, Associated Press WriterWASHINGTON – The Pentagon says it spent at least $100 million in the last six months responding to and repairing damage from cyber attacks and other network problems.

Senior military leaders say they are only beginning to track the costs, but the money was spent on manpower, computer technology and contractors hired to clean up after both external probes and internal mistakes. U.S. Strategic Command, which is responsible for protecting and monitoring the military's information grid, would not say how much of the cost was due to outside attacks against the system.

The revelations come as the Obama administration is finalizing a broad government-wide review of the nation's cybersecurity.

They'd say Bush is shutting down the Internet for oil and so bloggers couldn't post about him (thereby removing free speech).

Unfortunatley, I'm too intelligent for that, but there is still hope.

If Obama shut to internet down I'd just have to lay down in my bed and rest until it came back on or start writing those whose addresses I had the snail mail way. There is an expected increase in postage in May to go up to 50 cents a stamp. It used to cost me 50 cents to mail a letter to another country just ten years ago now it cost me a dollar to mail a letter to those same places. That's with just 4-5 sheets of paper in the envelope too. Internet is a much better more efficient way to send mail and communicate with others reducing paper waste. Wouldn't be very green of Obama to shut it down for long. If it was used like Hitler and Stalin used the radio it's not something that Obama alone could control to be honest. The airwaves are not all controlled by the government. Pirated radio still operates in some portions of the world more often then we think. There are hackers and pirates that would go down Alex Jones style with all that passion for conspiracy to take over the government stuff whose trying to take over the people.

Are we talking for uses of international espionage here? Strategic locations? Laser beams shooting from the sky?

He can technically shut down the Tier-1 providers. However, he cannot shut down the large wide area networks across multiple universities. Not possible to shut all of it down with the flick of a switch.

It depends on who is actually authoring the bill and whether it is receiving support from the White House, for one. Secondly - a sitting president has had the authority to take over the airwaves for things like presidential addresses and in the event of a national disaster or emergency, so this isn't that much different, except that with the internet, there is a national security issue. Shutting down servers that may pose a cyber security risk is reasonable, however, I would want some kind of checks and balances...like having kind of judicial oversight.
