I am currently applying for a K1 Visa. I am constantly trying to think ahead and be prepared. I asked my HR representative if when I married my fiance I could add him to my insurance. She asked our Insurance provider and he said that I couldn't until my future husband was approved for residency, and that then he would have to wait until the next open enrollment due to the fact that residency is not a "life changing event." If he is legally my husband and living in the US is it legal for the insurance company to deny him the insurance coverage?

I'm sure the rules vary by company and state but marriage is definitely one of those events that typically qualify.

All that I needed to add my wife was a SSN.

Residency is not, but marriage is. Sounds strange to me. Can you call the insurance company directly?

Good thought, I will look in to the SSN. I wasn't planning on applying until after we married so that we didn't have to keep going back to that office, but I will definitely take care of it right away if it will get him insured. Thanks
