Sounds to me like you look down on him. If you talk like that to his face, no wonder he doesn't want to hear from you.

No, when he taught himself English he only did the basics. He doesn't know/understand most slang/idioms. I'd say something and get the deer and the headlights look because it's something he never learned. I don't remember how many months it took for him to get the concept of "duh"...

Do you know German?

No, not a language I took in school.

May 13 will be my 4th year in the US and am settled... steady job , no debts etc... the financial meltdown has passed us by

Only English. He does much better writing than speaking English.
