Good Morning my fellow VJ family,

My wife has her Biometric Appointment on April 8th. What happens at this appointment as far as her residency is concerned. We did receive the NOA1 which states her residency has been extended 1 year. Will they or could we ask them for the I-551 stamp? Will they take her Permanent Residency Cardwhich doesn't expire until April 21st? I will be with her, but we want to be prepared for what we should do.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Your expired green card is worthless without that one year extension, and in like manner, your one year extension is worthless without that expired green card, you need BOTH to stay here legally, so don't let anyone take those away from you. The only time you have to surrender your green card is at the oath ceremony for USC.

You walk in there, have to fill out a hand written form with much of the same information as on your I-751, make sure you have that information with you, have your fingerprints taken, again, and a photo for your ten year card, taken again so dress appropriately, basically from the shoulders up. And walk out with your expired green card, one year extension noticed, and stamped biometrics appointment I-797. You may need the latter for evidence that you did have your biometrics completed as scheduled, just in case they lose your application.

The local ASC center will not be able to provide the I-551 stamp to you. You can make an infopass http://infopass.uscis.gov/ for that. I agree with NickD for the rest of the answers.

As well, unless you can provide a compelling reason for the I-551 stamp (ie did not receive NOA letter), they are unlikely to give you the stamp if you already have your NOA letter. The letter and the expired green card together are supposed to be the same thing as the stamp. You get the stamp if you don't have the NOA letter or the letter is expired/expiring.

The biometrics appointment are super-easy and usually super quick - nothing to worry about there!

Hi Mike1972e,

For more information, you can read the detailed review of my I-751 biometrics experience here (in Septmeber 2008, Buffalo NY):

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...c=153099&hl=

And no, they won't ask your wife for her I-551 stamp and they will not take your wife's green card away. In the meantime, she can keep her expiring/expired 2yr green card and 1yr NOA extension letter, and she should be ok mainaining legal US residency status, travelling, and employment, with those documents.

Hope this helps. Good luck on the rest of your immigration journey too.
