Authority to Travel

I am a teacher by profession and I am filing for my resignation at the office. I was then approved by the Schools Division Superintendent but I am advised by her secretary to come back to present my school clearance thus, I will be given an authority to travel. My question is how important is an Authority to Travel? In fact, my resignation had been approved by the Division Superintendent and I already presented a certificate that I am already cleared from everything at school signed by my Principal. Is there really a necessity to procure an Authority to Travel before I can go abroad?

Authority to Travel are for people who are still employed by the government when they go through the immigration at NAIA. But if you are going to resign before you travel then you are good to go.

Just file your resignation.

Though i find it strange that you are required to get the "Authority to Travel" paper. I used to be a college instructor from one of the state university in Manila. When i resigned, i never received "authority to travel" paper. Nobody question me everytime i get out of the country.

I also taught in private universities, no "authority to travel" paper after i resigned.

Thanks Charles, Raquel and Rheanick. Your quick reply really help me a lot. I do hope I will not get in trouble with the customs at NAAI. I just called CFO this morning and told them about my resignation. They said I still need to secure an Authority to Travel. My Gosh, I don't know if I can comply all this. My husband will be coming next week and we have already tickets in going back to US. Pls pray that I will be fine with the resignation letter I have now. Thanks

Just a tip, do not show any government employee id when they ask for identification aside from your passport. Use a postal id or driver's license. When my former co-workers visit other asian countries they leave their employee id behind and not bring it with them because one of our friends did not make it through her flight in singapore when they saw that she is a goverment employee and has no authority to travel. Have a good trip B)

And you do not need the Data Summary when you go through NAIA immigration. You just need your passport with visa and CFO sticker, plane ticket and some cash to pay for travel tax if its not included in your plane ticket.

My question is how important is an Authority to Travel? In fact, my resignation had been approved by the Division Superintendent and I already presented a certificate that I am already cleared from everything at school signed by my Principal. Is there really a necessity to procure an Authority to Travel before I can go abroad?

Under Section 5, Item (i) of Republic Act No.8239 (The Philippine Passport Act of 1996), "if the applicant is a government employee, the travel authority issued by the head of department, agency or office, may be required only if said applicant is applying for an official passport". The official passport is also called the "red passport" to distinguish it from the regular green (or is it blue now?) passport.

If you are not travelling in your capacity as a government employee, you do not need the travel authority. However, if available, it is always best to have it with you in case you encounter an immigration officer who does not know the law.

And you do not need the Data Summary when you go through NAIA immigration. You just need your passport with visa and CFO sticker, plane ticket and some cash to pay for travel tax if its not included in your plane ticket.

Since honneh is holding CR-IR visa, she will need the Immigrant Data Summary when she leaves the country. K-1 visa holders do not need one.
