April 4, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Volunteers were spreading the love on Michigan Avenue Saturday for the second annual global Free Hugs Day.

From 10 a.m. until 10 p.m., members of the Chicago non-profit group called Positive Focus were offering free hugs to people walking by the old Water Tower.

The idea behind Free Hugs Day is to spread love one hug at a time and show that people do care.

Saturday's event was under way in 23 states, 20 countries and on six of the world's seven continents. It was truly a global effort.

Cool idea! There was a video I saw (possibly on VJ?) a while ago that showed a similar event - one man offering free hugs and people tentatively accepting, until more and more people started to join and it ended with all sorts of people hugging each other and parading down the street welcoming others into the parade. It was really good, so yay for free hugs!

ugh !!! Who would want a patchouli (sp?) smelling, tree hugging, bathroom tissue recycling, work shy, demonstrating, socialist hippy hugging them?

ewwww you had me saying no at patchouli :dead:

not to mention the likelihood of catching something nasty !!! :o

What no kisses? Can recall New Years Eve in New Orleans where all kinds of ugly women wanted kisses. Didn't want to offend anyone, but did rinse my mouth out with Draino afterwards.

Were guys that were promoting hugs to other guys in Chicago getting erections in the process? Would be concerned about that.

We are an uptight Victorian society, not so with my wife's girlfriends in either Venezuelan or Colombia, not only a big hug, but a kiss as well, but on the cheek, not the lips. Wife likes it when I show affection to her friends.

He has A LOT of free time on his hands.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
