Hi there,

I am a K1 visa holder and just filed for AOS. My wife and I got married 2 weeks ago and we did not prepare the paperwork for our marriage to be recognized in France. So, I know I can do it now if I want but it seems to be a BIG pain in the a**. Is there any French/American couple here that got married twice?? (civil marriage)? Can you share your experience?

Thanks!

Sebastien

Hi Sebastien,

To make your wedding recognize by France, you need to check your French Consulat.

The only thing who can make things slower is that you didn't do the "publication des bans" at your French Consulat (according to what you're saying), but it doesn't mean you cannot make it recognize by France. It might result in having you coming to your Consulat for an interview...even if I never heard anybody who had to go.

Here is the link of the French Consulat in Chicago, it might help you out, but you need to send your papers in the Consulat of your area: http://www.consulfrance-chicago.org/spip.php?article318.

Hope it will help you out! ;)

Good luck

Was exactly in the same situation. I e-mailed asking if I needed to get married again in France and they told me "don't do that or you will be considered polygamist to the same man and will need to get the second marriage annulled".

I didn't do the publication des bans and it took 4 months for the consulate of san francisco to recognize the wedding and issue the livret de famille. Depending on where you live, the process might be faster.

AOS Approved on 10-17-08 (details in profile)

Removal of Conditions on 07-19-10

In this tedious process, we tend to forget that this is all worth it.

I love my hubby beyond anything in this world.
