I accidentally broke my eyeglass the other night and so I just wanna ask you guys on what store can you recommend me buying a pair of eyeglass. I went to Walmart this afternoon to check out the prices. I found out it cost $45 for eye exam, $90 - $140 for the frame (depends on what design and brand) and $118 for the lens and grade  . I wore contacts before but I didn't like it so i went back in wearing eyeglasses. Do you know any store where I can buy cheaper ones? Next month, hubby and I will going to have vision insurance so that we won't pay much in buying eyeglasses :crying: .

I just bought some new glasses this week, there was a store that was offering $158 for two pairs, so I would shop around if I were you. I ended up paying almost $400 because I have a high prescription....that means I'm as blind as a bat on crack :D

The two most commonly available stores would be LensCrafters and Pearl Vision. I've gone to LensCrafters before and they usually have a "two for one deal" in which you can get a second pair of frames free. I can't recall any details about the lenses.

I'd definitely recommend getting a second pair. One pair broke on me last week, so I had to switch. Somehow I've managed to break Flexon frames, which really takes some effort. I usually keep my backup pair in my car's glove box. In the unlikely event my glasses break when out somewhere, I can switch. Seeing is generally beneficial when driving. :)

Wife and I were at Goodwill, she wears contacts, but need some reading glasses, brand new and the most expensive pair there was under ten bucks, frame quality was good and the lenses were aberration free. By that, I mean you put on the glasses and look at a straight vertical and a horizontal line and turn your head left and right and up and down, and that line, like a corner should not bend as you are looking at all points of the lenses.

I use to buy my glasses from my clinic as they had the best lenses, but they have gone crazy with frame prices with the cheapest pair, not only price, but quality was poor starting at a hundred bucks, with most in the 200+ buck range. Our Wal-Mart also sucks, and doesn't have the lowest prices, certainly when it comes to frame prices.

We have a Shopko in town, like Wal-Mart, but did get a very nice set of Italian black metal frames for 50 bucks, lenses can run from 40 to 100 bucks with the latter, the kind that darken in the sun, they also had plastic frames for as low as 25 bucks. Ha, asked if I could bring in a pair of those reading glasses and have them pop out the lenses for my prescription, they won't do that. I did buy a good pair with the sun darkening lenses for 150 and a second pair with the cheaper lenses for 90 just in case I would break or lose my key pair, frames are identical, they have to look good and be comfortable, but that gives me spare parts in case I break a temple, got the kind with screws so I can even change the lenses if I have to.

Don't believe I could ever buy glasses off the net, they have precision equipment to measure your head and technicians to make the adjustments, and if they don't fit well, you don't have to take them. Seems like fashion really hit this market with some outrageous prices for a crappy set of frames. In my case, normally only wear glasses when driving, flying, or watching TV, but never when I am working or at the computer. I tend to misplace my glasses frequently having a one track mind, LOL. Always a problem for me.

You really have to shop around.

If you live in an area near Costco and have a friend with a Costco membership, I'd recommend checking out their vision center. As far as I know they just do frames & lenses, so you'll need your prescription, but I was able to get two pairs for $300 (and I have absolutely awful vision -- $300 is what I'd normally pay for just the lenses in one pair.) I've had them a year and they've held up great.

I heard Wal-Mart Eyeglass Center is one of the cheapest around.

If you're getting the frame, I'd suggest you go with Titanium versus Gun Metal frames. Gun Metal is more brittle than Titanium. Therefore, gun metal is weaker in terms of strength compared to Titanium and will break easier.

Whenever I've heard the phrase "gun metal" used when talking about eyeglass frames, it was always in reference to color. Titanium is a good suggestion, though. So are Flexon frames. Very few people can actually break those. I'm just "lucky" in that I have managed to do so what others have failed. :P

I just can't believe how high prices here are. In the Philippines, you can buy a pair of eyeglasses for the price of $20 and that includes the frame and the lens, the eye exam is free. That $20 is already considered an ok eyeglass but mine (the ones that i broke) was $60 which is considered a bit pricey. I have poor eyesight. I am near sighted and i wear my eyeglass all the time except when I am eating, sleeping, taking shower (of course lol!) and taking pictures hehe. Two days before my eyeglass got broken my hubby said that we will get vision insurance. I looked at the price of monthly payment for the insurance and I told him that I don't think we need to pay that much for it, so in other words i said no to him. When my eyeglass got broken and saw the prices of eyeglasses then I told him I think you are right lol! let's get insurance next month

Again, thanks to all the replies and I think I know where to get eyeglasses now :)

I tried plastic and gun metal frames but I have never tried titanium. In fact, I have never heard titanium frames hehe. I guess that is something I might wanna try.
