Congrats Melinda!

I like the name Omar bcz its a bible name and arab name. Omar was the father of the arab tribe in Genesis. :)

The boy's name Omar \o-mar\ is pronounced OH-mar. It is of Arabic and Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "speaker; flourishing, long-lived". Biblical: a sheik of Edom and son of Esau. Omar Khayyam (12th century) was a Persian poet, astronomer, and mathematician. Caliph Omar II made Islam an imperial power. Poet Omar Khayyam; General Omar Bradley; actor Omar Sharif.

Congratulations!!!!

My son is Jamal (beautiful) or Gamal if he is in Egypt... also considered naming him Laith (young lion). These are easy for Americans to say correctly and spell... something that was important to me since I've lived with a very difficult name (first name AND more than one last name) my entire life and gotten very tired of it... Plus I knew my son's last name was going to be hard enough so I wanted to be sure to give him an easier first name.

He is 21 now and still goes by Jamal, so I guess I did pick something he could live with.. At 13 I quit using the crazy hybridized (southern tradition) first name my parents gave me... so I know if you hate your name, you can find away around it... B) Glad he didn't feel he had to... but I wouldn't have been surprised if he did after 9/11 and he does get some flack for it..

Lots to consider when naming an Arab/Muslim child who will grow up in the USA... Can be difficult with the first son if there are family traditions to carry on.. His name was SUPPOSED to be Tahireddine by family tradition, but I put my foot down on that one! He does however have his father's name for a middle name... and it's a dooozey.. Abdulkhader... so there was NO WAY I was naming that tiny little 5 lbs. 12 oz bundle Tahireddine Abdulkhader and a big old crazy last name..

Brings back memories... Best of luck in your pregnancy!
