I received my EAD card today - yipppeeeee!

Okay, so I recently got accepted for an internship, and my hubby is doing taxes and I need to start building credit. So I need my SSN as quick as possible. I'm going to head to the office on monday morning. Does anyone know if they issue the ssn on the spot? and then I just wait for the card to arrive? or do they give me a letter so I can show my employer?

When you go to the SSA office with your EAD and completed application form(and passport) they'll see if you're on their system. If you are then you get the card around 2 weeks later. I wasn't on the system and it took around 3 weeks to get the card. I think you might be able to work with just the number whilst you wait for the actual card.

Just wanted to say congrats on getting your EAD card. Your social security I am thinking takes roughly two weeks to get in mail once you go to the office like the others stated. Good luck on your ss card and internship.

I applied for a new Social Security card last Friday and received it yesterday - exactly one week!

When I applied for my first card, I got it in 5 days.

They won't give you your number on the spot, because SSN's are now issued centrally (in the past,

each SSA office had its own "range" of numbers.)

I wonder what SSA are going to do when they run out of numbers. There are only 999,999,999 numbers

to go around, and I don't think they re-use them when people die or - in the case of foreign workers -

leave the country.

SSNs have always been assigned within the SSN Areas assigned to each state, but now the Area of your SSN is based on the address used on the application, before it was based on the state in which you applied. Used to be that offices had blocks of cards with numbers already on them. The office just typed in your name.

RM 00201.060 Social Security Number (SSN) Assignment and Card Issuance

The assignable numbers are less than 999,999,999, because they aren't going to use all zeros in the Area or Group, i.e. 000-99-1234 or 123-00-1234. Not going to use Area 666, i.e. 666-67-1234. Plus Areas 700 through 728 were used by the Railroad Board for people that for the railroads. As of 2003 420 million SSNs have been assigned.

Once the application is cleared the SSN record is created the next day or day after. Then you can go back to the office and have them give you the number if you don't feel like waiting for the card.

Currently there is no plan to reissue numbers after someone dies. Since SSA averages issuing 5 million numbers a year they still have plenty numbers left. The only way they could possible reissue numbers is after a number had been inactive for 75 or 100 years, since once someone dies the SSN is going to be the claim number to pay survivor benefits.

It took about 10 days for Claudeth to get her initial social security card. We went back to change her name on the card to her married name and that took about six weeks to get back, the social security people had to validate her name change with the USCIS folks, at least that is what they told us. Good luck
