Hello one and all, its been a while, just want to say i arrived safe and sound in the mighty USA on the 26th March. Been quite hectic the past week, settling in the new place and all that, preparing for the wedding, we have achieved quite alot in these past few days. Anyway......

I was wondering when i should be applying for a SS#? Like i said i arrived on the 26th March and we will be getting married on the 18th April, so im thinking it would be a good idea to apply for a SS# asap right? I did read on here somewere that you have to wait 2 weeks??? until you can apply, but i also read that someone applied 12 days into their arrival with no issues.

Not having this SS# kinda sucks since i have to have one to get in on the bank account, apply for a US drivers license and all the rest of the good stuff people can do with a social.

So, any input on the subject would be a massive help and where to go to get the forms and that would be a bonus.

Thanks in advance,

Stuart.

I would say one day next week should be OK. Monday you will have been here 10 days.

Take your birth certificate, passport and I-94 into an SSA office.

Find SSA office:

http://www.ssa.gov/locator

You can go to any SSA office unless you live in an area serviced by a card center.

They must verify you immigration status before the SSN can be assigned. If you are lucky they can do it while you are at the offices. Otherwise, you could be waiting weeks or months.

Once the application has been processed you should receive your card in the mail within two weeks, but you can go back to the office normally the next day to find out the number before the card arrives.

There was another person on the forums that went exactly after her 10th day, and she was still not on the system; that caused her SS# to be delayed...honestly, we waited 10 business days, and we had no problems; card arrived a week later. I would go after April 10th so that 10 business days have gone by. I like to err on the safe side...

It's best to ask if you are in the system yet. If not, say "never mind", and go back in a couple of days. Manual verification is what takes so long. Some are in the system by the next day. Some aren't for two weeks. It depends on your POE and how efficient they are in putting your entry into the database. Apply in the name exactly as it is written on your I-94 card because that's what's in the database.

The VJ guides explain it all pretty well. Scroll down the page to the K1 section. http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssn

The manual verification does take a while, but there is another verification step between that and the initial verification.

It's more like when your POE sends off the part of the I-94 they keep to be keyed into the system. I believe they go to a contractor in Kentucky.

Unless you have a legal name change document, i.e. marriage certificate, court ordered name change, you have no other choice but to use the name off the I-94.

Probably will not going to hurt to wait another week, but it's 10 calendar days, not 10 business days.
