I will begin the petition process to bring my UK fiance over to marry..

he is coming on a gap year visa, so will be with me during the initial paperwork process..

what should I be gathering?

I know photos and proof of seeing each other..

what about letters from family/friends? what should those say?

what info needs to be on the back of those photos?

also, im reading about needing a sponsor/support in the States? we are students and thus have no money/assets, so I am wondering, would a parent do just fine? are there requirements for this?

Just trying to begin and sort things so the process may be easier.

would it be advised to hire a lawyer to help with the process??

Thanks all!

Letters from friends/family are used for Spousal visas, and much later when removing conditions from a 2 year conditional green-card.

Good luck.

You do not necessarily need the use of lawyer as all the information is here on VJ if you're willing to look, unless you feel you have a difficult case?

fairly straight-forward case.. just we are young- and in over our heads!! lol

but VJ is so helpful!

Good reason to do it yourself. A lawyer will just put his foot on your neck and HOLD your head under water.

Good luck. You have found the site to avoid attorneys.

Knock it off, Gary.

I met this girl in Londonderry when we were over there last week and told her about VJ, FBI and BE.

Try not to act like a #######, OK?

No one on VJ should ever tell another person to NOT use an attorney. Everyone has different cases and different abilities - some of us are good at paperwork, others are not. We don't know a persons strengths or weaknesses and thusly shouldn't tell them what will be best for them. Only THEY themselves can judge that. ;)

To tell someone outright that a lawyer will screw them over is just plain wrong. VJ is not against anyone using legal advice regarding immigration at all - in many cases it is the only route to go.

Additionally, play nice in this thread. Thanks.
