Happy belated birthday, Domegirl!!! I think those books might be interesting but I would struggle with an inner resentment when reading them. LOL

I must say, they are fluff pieces but they are actually fun to read.

After that I just bought myself Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse by Robert Rankin and another book called THE NIGHT OF THE GUN which is an autobiography of David Carr, NY Times writer who used to be a crackhead. Very interesting read I'm sure.

Let me know how you liked that book. Sounds very interesting.

I just finished The Doctor's Wife. Pretty bizarre ending but fast mindless reading. I've just been sorting books in fact. Those that I'm giving away to my Bridge Club for people to sort through and take home. Another box for my MIL, those that I've read and find very good; and another box to go to the Used book store. I haven't ventured out to this store though, but I'll see what they can offer me for these books. I'm not looking for money, but just a credit towards any other books there I might like.

I started Love and Longing in Bombay today by Vikram Chandra. Short stories. Looks like it will be good.

Krikit, you mentioned you were reading An American Wife? Yes, my understanding is that it was loosely based on Laura Bush...perhaps more an unauthorized book? Anyway, I downloaded that to listen to during my walks, just started it. Is it worth listening to? Veryyyyyyyy long.

I can't make up my mind whether I like it yet or not. (Haven't picked it back up since last week. lol) I still can't get over the fact that this is kind of like a Laura Bush biography and it's really making me go "Ew". LOL

So what's everyone reading this summer?

I've been going through a book a week, I love summer reading. Anyway, the one I'm reading now is called "Digging to America" by Anne Tyler, my Mom bought it for me and it's so good. It's about how immigrants feel in America, how they adjust, and how you don't really 'belong' here, but you no longer belong in your home country either....

I got my husband "How to be Canadian'' too, he seemed in awe about it. But I'm currently reading, ''Bad Moon Rising'' by Sherrilyn Kenyon and I'm almost reading "Anasi Boys'' by Neil Gaiman. Neil Gaiman is my hero. <3

Hi everyone :) i hope you are all having a great summer so far! I have definitely renewed my love of reading this summer and have read a few good books so far. I finished reading 1000 Splendid Suns (Khaled Hossein, wrote the Kite Runner) and it was heartbreaking and empowering at the same time. I also just finished reading a book called The Strain, Guillermo Del Toro (he wrote and directed Pan's Labyrinth). It's a book about vampires, BUT it is definitely not like Twilight - he wanted to take the vampire lore back to the way it should be - evil and violent. I loved reading it - kinda scary and some nights i went to bed with the lights on...lol

I'm currently reading The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill (canadian author) and it is absolutely amazing. I can't seem to put it down and i highly recommend it.

I read in the last week:

The Stones Cry Out

Daughter of the Ganges

The Love Season

The Fifth Woman

Faceless Killers

Nothing really notable. The last two are mysteries written by a Swedish man. They take place in Sweden as well. So, the characters, description of police procedures and scenery are very interesting. Different.

I just started yesterday The Time Travelers Wife. I've got about half way, and while it's interesting, I don't know if I like it yet. I know many people on here rated it as one of their favourites, so I'm still plugging away on it. I also note that it's an upcoming movie as well in theatres shortly. I've never liked movies made from books however, so I highly doubt if I would go. BUT going to a movie where I didn't like that book that well might be something different! We'll see...I'm still only half way done the book....

I enjoyed the Time Traveller's Wife. It was quite different and sad in many ways too. I started reading " . . . And Ladies of the Club" by Helen Hooven Santmyer. It's going to keep me occupied for a while - it's 1076 pages long. "Set in a small Ohio town and spanning over sixty years (starting in 1867) it centers of the members of a woman's literary club and their struggles to understand themselves, each other and the tumultuous world they live in" It is a actually a very well written story with great characters and lovely historical anecdotes so far. I've only just started it so am on page 86.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

That sound REALLY good Kathryn! I love long books like that as well...as long as their good. Bump this thread when you've read a bit more! I'm going to the annual YMCA book fair here for 6 days starting this weekend. They have over 5 million books. I usually go twice or three times. The first time I go, the first day, usually I pick up 50 books, then I go back on the Tuesday for 1/2 price day, then on Wednesday for $5.00 for whatever you can fit into a box day. The books are usually 25 cents to top cost of $2.00. There are collector books, paperbacks of course are the most plentiful, audio recordings, reference books...gosh, so much stuff! This is my top book acquisition event of the year.

Carla, did you finish An American Wife? I had put it down when I was 1/4 of the way through because I really couldn't get into it, and then I brought it with me to read on the airplane and am now about halfway through. I really hate it. I can't believe I bought all that ####### about what a great book it was. icon2.gif

I bought the American version of that..... Someone Knows My Name. I sure hope it's only the title they changed, and not any of the text. That would not make me happy. Haven't started it as yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

My uncle gave me Deception Point by Dan Brown. He says it's a good read.

These obviously aren't novels, but Carla's mention of the book fair made me recall that I'd like to find Suzanne Somers cookbooks somewhere. I've heard good things about them. I wonder if they'll have them at the Goodwill? I should check there.

I am reading "Julie & Julia". LOVE it. About 3/4 of way through.

Saw the movie over the weekend. It's close to the book but not perfect.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast
