My Atwood favourite is Oryx and Crake. I went searching around the net last night and found a book called Every Man Dies Alone as I have a degree in History with most of my work done on the Holocaust this book will be one that I will pick up this summer. Has anyone read it?

I saw that on one of the best sellers lists yesterday and wondered about it. Sounds hilarious. Though I probably won't read it if it contains scary stuff. I always end up having nightmares when I see or read anything scary. :(

It's not really scary, but I guess it depends on how sensitive you are. I'm a horror movie buff, and haven't found a movie in a couple decades that will actually scare me anymore. It's more comedy than horror, really. If you're familiar with Pride & Prejudice at all, just picture the Bennet family sitting down to tea with Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingly, and they are all of a sudden interrupted by zombies. They get up, slice a few heads off with their swords, then sit back down to tea.

The zombies are a comedic addition, and so far there's not much gore. More verbal sparring with each other than sparring with the manky undead. ;)

Well, I finished A Fine Balance in the wee hours of the night. I also finished the Life of Edgar Sawtelle on the plane to Los Angeles. I would definitely recommend A fine Balance over Edgar, I beleive it is time for something a little lighter.

OMG, I hated that book. I think I was in a very negative place in my life when I read it, because I thought it was total simplistic horse-sh!t. Methinks I need to read it again and give it another go.

My favorite book is The Power of One and I think the philosophy of both books is very similar in retrospect.

LOL MrsCat. I found the book so positive and uplifting but I can imagine that if I was in a negative spot, like I was a few years ago, I would have hated it too! I'll have to look for The Power of One though! Thanks!

Absolutely! It was a great book.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Oh my...my ALL TIME FAVOURITE BOOK so far in my life is A Fine Balance. Read all of Mistry's books...they're wonderful, but A Fine Balance is my TOP book. I was so moved by that book, I couldn't read anything else for a week. My MIL just lent me Edgar Sawtelle, is it a "heavy" book as well?

Yes, I've read the Alchemist. I adored it. I have my own copy as well. I laughed when I read that you'll buy a copy of your own. I do that with my most favourites.

I love Canadian writers, and in particular Atwood.

What I find interesting is that most of the authors I love, and Gene is the one that pointed it out to me, in the US anyway, are from either Washington or Oregan on the west coast and Vermont, and Wisconsin in the east. Very interesting.

I just finished Loving Frank. A really good book. There is a recent book Women I think it's called on the same topic, Frank Lloyd Wright and his "women", but I've heard it's convulted and very confusing. Loving Frank is by Nancy Horan, and very nicely written. It's only about Mrs. Cheney. I recommend this to anyone for something more light.

I'm now reading the Doctor's Wife. Seems to be an element of Misery in it? Will report back later.

It is a "dark" book also.

The 1/3rd goes fast, middle third was tough to get through, the ending 1/3 I did on the plane to LA. I was glad I finished it.

I am starting The Road tonight. It is a bit dark I have been told.

Remember - A day without reading is like a day without sunshine.

Lately, all my reading appears to be on VJ. :hehe:

Duh. Because I'm the best author in the world.

You guys are totally going to laugh....I am laughing as i post it. My b-day was yesterday and I got the 2 tori spelling books. Stori telling and mommywood. LMFAO.

I must say, they are fluff pieces but they are actually fun to read.

After that I just bought myself Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse by Robert Rankin and another book called THE NIGHT OF THE GUN which is an autobiography of David Carr, NY Times writer who used to be a crackhead. Very interesting read I'm sure.
