Zombies for the win.

I remember someone telling me they thought that was "silly", and adding vampires would have been "much more realistic".

Thank you, no. Hordes of undead over sparkly nobles any day, please. Awesome to hear the book is good so far, Reba!

The book is "Firefly Lane"

by Kristin Hannah

One of my favorites. She's from the islands in the Puget Sound and I found her by accident at a local bookstore here. I've read ALL her books :)

One of my favourite series of books is by Diana Gabaldon with the Outlander series

I LOVE these books too, Krikit!

I am currently reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and quite enjoying it! :

Oh, one of my students is reading it now. She brought it to Book Club and I now want to read it.

I swore when I finished reading for my comps exam in grad school that I would only read fluff and fun for 10 years. It worked for a while, but let's face it, when your major is British literature and you like it, it's hard to break into pure fluff :)

My current favorite book is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. It's a quick read and has some great themes (yeah, I sound like an English teacher  )

I'm currently reading Three Cups of Tea What a beautiful book.

I'll agree with you there!

Although, if they were to put vampires into some other gothich type classic, I'd read it!

As long as they don't sparkle!

I am currently reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and quite enjoying it! Here is a brief synopsis from the website:

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies features the original text of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie action. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton-and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers-and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead.

:D

My co-worker is reading that right now and loving it. She loves horror movies so I thought this would be up her alley.

I also read Timothy Findley's "The Wars" on vacation. It was a decent read. All you Can Lit lovers out there have to read Findley. He's such a great author. Ondaatje is one of my favourite authors of all time so I do recommend "in the skin of a lion" as well. So many great novelists out there!

Oh oh..if any of you are looking for a great read with a more modernist writing style..pick up The Frog King and/or Goodbye Lemon by Adam Davies. He's a NYC author and just out of this world. (in my literi opinion ;) )

My lips chapped and split

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

One of my favourite series of books is by Diana Gabaldon with the Outlander series "which tells the story of Jamie Fraser, a Scottish Highlander from the 18th century, and his time-traveling wife, Claire." It sounds silly but it's absolutely fascinating. Anway, it's been quite a number of years since I've read that series so I'm going to read them again.

And I am currently re-reading the Outlander series almost through Dragonfly in Amber as per Krikit's favourite.

I'm rereading the Outlander series since the next book is due out the end of this year. I also have read the Twilight series to see what all they hype was about too. I read about 3 books a week so I don't have the room to list all my favorites on here...LOL. However for all of you who like to read books in order by series or like to see what author has written this website is pretty awsome for all of that.

http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/

I love the Diana Gabaldon Outlander series as well. I've read them all and am currently listening to the series now. I downloaded them from audible.com and listen on my iPod either while walking or in the car. It's a great way to "read" them again. Each book is 30+ hours!! I love it!

The Gabaldon Outlander series is always good for a reread, the characters are just so fun to get into and well written.

OMG!!!!!! Someone else knows about the Outlander series???!!! I LOVE that series! Diana Gabaldon, actually, attended the same university I did - Northern Arizona University. In fact, her father, is the reason for the name of the dorm... Gabaldon Hall!

:bonk: *points up^^*

I saw that on one of the best sellers lists yesterday and wondered about it. Sounds hilarious. Though I probably won't read it if it contains scary stuff. I always end up having nightmares when I see or read anything scary. :(

I always enjoyed reading the Robert Munsch books to the kids I babysat...

the first time I read "love you forever".. I cried...

And "I Have To Go" is another one of my favourites of his..

http://www.robertmunsch.com/booklist.cfm

good lord - I cry every time I read that book - I could never get through it with my daughter :)

If you haven't seen Robert Munsch read it himself, it's just so great - might be on You tube - such an interesting dude

Girl - I just can't get into his books, although I have tried and certainly read some at university......but that's why there are so many different authors with different styles - so that all of us will find something we like!

I would LIKE to be reading Cemetary Dance, by messrs Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.

I would LIKE to.

But I am currently number 252 in the hold line for it at my library.

"But Dora," you say, "why don't you just buy it?"

"Well," says I, "their last three books in the series were so awful that I think they owe me financially for the hours of my life spent reading them."

"But Dora!" you say, again, "Why do you keep reading their books if they're so bad?"

"Well," says I, once more, "I've been reading them for so long that I can't stop. And I keep hoping they're going to realise what a god-awful character Constance is, and the whole series will magically be brilliant and awesome again, which I think is a reasonable expectation."

I have heard good things about this book, but I am going to hold off buying it, much as I want to. (I will give anyone who spoils it for me SUCH A PURPLE-NURPLE the likes of which the world has never seen) I am still suspicious that it will suck, and they will have my money. Again. If you listen closely, you can actually hear them rolling around in piles of it, laughing.

"fluff and fun" does that equal brain candy! :) When I completed my B/A at 50; I had a huge party to celebrate my engagement, convecation, and turning 50. Three of my history profs came and gave me a gift certificate to Chapters with the instructions to read some "brain candy" for a change.

The Road seems to be one of those things you either just don't get, or you love it. My husband read and adored it after I had cast it aside. I just couldn't get past the unusual narrative. It's a powerful book, but it's not the most cheerful one.

I finally got my library card here and I am so excited! I love to read! It's also the first library card I didn't have to pay for which is awesome.

Right now I'm reading a lot of fluff, or brain candy as you call it. Mainly Patricia Cornwell and her Kay Scarpetta series as well as Laurell K. Hamilton and her Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series. I love both of these authors.

My favorite book of all time has to be "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold. It's so off the cuff. It's a murder mystery mostly but it's told from the point of view of the murdered person looking down on earth from heaven. It was a great read. It's going to be made into a movie here soon.

Treble, I don't much like Atwood either but I liked The Handmaid's Tale. It was required reading but it wasn't as dry as some of the other books we had to read.

I'm loving this thread as I'm building up a list of books that I want to read. My library's website has a list function that you can build up and they put the books on your list on hold as your holds become available again. It's super cool! Oh, and they have a BOOKMOBILE! It makes 10 stops throughout the city during the week. They'll bring put your holds on the bookmobile and you can go there to get them, which is awesome. It actually stops less than a block from my house, so it's super convenient! WOOHOO for books!
