Just finished "The Kennedy Curse" about, well the curse of the Kennedy family dating back to the early 1800's. It's quite interesting and leads me to believe there really is a curse upon that family.

I'm currently read The Stone Angel by Margaret Lawrence. My mentor told me to wait until I was much older to read it (40+) because it would mean more to me then....however after all these years of staring at it, I'm giving it a go any ways.

I read "The Stone Angel" last year and enjoyed it very much, if you like it try "Water for Elephants" it is about a circus during the depression. I really found it worthwhile.

I tend to read much more non-fiction than fiction lately.

I just saw this thread now (it got revived today), and got caught up on earlier posts.

Some of the fiction that others have recommended I really enjoyed - particularly Roots (read it when I was about 14!! That made a real impression on me at such a young age, especially some of the more graphic images like Kizzy being separated from her parents), Chaim Potok's books (The Chosen etc.), and Wicked.

For the poster who enjoyed Roots, may I recommend Octavia Butler's "Kindred" - it's kind of a scifi time-travel thing, but it's really much more about antebellum slavery than time travel. It's about a modern black woman who is involuntarily time-transported from her modern life in LA back and forth to a slave plantation in the Deep South. Very cool book.

My current reading list, all non-fiction, has some books on Evolution, and also presidential biographies, I'm very keen on those.

I just finished reading Your Inner Fish and Why Evolution Is True. Both are excellent. Every time I see the robins hopping about on my lawn, I'm seeing dinosaurs now, LOL.

I also read Guns, Germs and Steel recently, it's a monumental work on human history over the past 10,000 years. A real eye opener.

Presidential biographies I'm reading are FDR by Jean Edward Smith and Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin, which is about Lincoln's political skills.

That sounds like an interesting book. Somewhat akin to the Outlander series. Thanks. I'll give it a try.

I'm getting rave reviews from people who have read The Book of Negroes, so I'm going to pick that one up. Apparently it's known as Someone Knows My Name in the US because the Americans won't touch the Book of Negroes. I found that interesting since the original Book of Negroes is an historical document.

How have I missed this thread until now?

Joe and I 'decorate' with books! We both love reading and when I moved here much of what was in the moving van was boxes of books. We had to double the shelves Joe already had in the house just to accommodate my books - and even now they are all overflowing.

I don't know how I avoid reading it until now but right now I am reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee and enjoying it very much.

My favourites include anything by Jane Austen, but particularly Pride and Prejudice. I love The Blue Castle by Lucy Maud Montgomery, and The Persian Boy by Mary Renault - those are about my 'favourites' although, like others have said, I don't really have just one or two but many favourites which I tend to re-visit like old friends. I enjoy the "English country house' style of murder mysteries, the Anne McAffrey Dragon Rider books, and a lot of the classics, too! And then, there is the non-fiction . . . . !!!

Love Lucy Maud Montgomery - and read every last thing she wrote ! I even did a paper on her in 3rd year university - do you know she is the only writer that we have who wrote about the experince of everyday Cdn families at home during WWI? Just a great story writer

I went to Barnes and Noble the other night but didn't get anything. I just wasn't sure what I was in the mood for.

I did read all the twilight books a while back- I really enjoyed them.

Over the last few months- it has been most of Phillipa Gregory's books, she wrote the Other Boleyn Girl. Between her books and watching the Tudors- I have really been into Henry V111 and that period.

There are so many amazing Canadian authors out there. If any of you are interested in reading something new by a Canadian author, let me know. My concentration in university was canadian literature.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I read The Other Boleyn Girl, The Queen's Fool and The Virgin's Lover just recently. My favorite of those was The Other Boleyn Girl- so much better and more scandalous than the movie of course.

I just finished reading the Twilight books- Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. I wasn't going to read them because I thought they were teenager books, but I just loved them! All of my coworkers and even my mom are reading them as well!

I'm rereading the Outlander series since the next book is due out the end of this year. I also have read the Twilight series to see what all they hype was about too. I read about 3 books a week so I don't have the room to list all my favorites on here...LOL. However for all of you who like to read books in order by series or like to see what author has written this website is pretty awsome for all of that.

OMG!!!!!! Someone else knows about the Outlander series???!!! I LOVE that series! Diana Gabaldon, actually, attended the same university I did - Northern Arizona University. In fact, her father, is the reason for the name of the dorm... Gabaldon Hall!

Okay for those of you who don't know me I am based in Edinburgh at the moment, and I did a particularly geeky thing and walked a lot of the routes listed in Dragonfly in Amber yesterday, the weather was fab and it was thoroughly enjoyable to imagine the being in a place the story took place. (Even if it is fiction  ).

Also couldn't help myself picked up a guilty pleasure for 60p at a charity store. Reading Lauren Weisberger's 'Everyone Worth Knowing'

Love that author, and that book! Good one.

I agree!!!

I love love love Roots,,my fiance ,now my husband bought me the movies when i first mentione to him that i was reading the book.I cried from start to finish and today, married to a white handsome dude,i look back and can only say what a journey it has been for blacks and whites in American tobe where there are today socially and politically.

A while back i read Uncle Toms Cabin and it moved me from page to page.It has the same story line as Roots.

I was a live in nanny in Canada and read some really ineresting children books, one in pariculy called Full Moon by Bora Becca. Its a wonderfull book, nice pictures, great story about story telling in a small African village.Same with Sense pass King.

Good thread, keep them coming and dont forget to read Full Moon.

I am currently reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and quite enjoying it! Here is a brief synopsis from the website:

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies features the original text of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie action. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton-and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers-and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead.
