Not 20th C China but I think you might enjoy the two Empress Orchid novels, Kathryn. I can't remember the author but one of them is entitled Empress Orchid. I think the other one is the Last Empress. Anyway, they are really good.

I've just finished Pearl of China by Anchee Min, who is the author of the Empress Orchid novels. I've got her own autobiography Red Azalea on order and I will follow up with the Empress books - they do look very interesting! Min has quite a number of books written and is another very enjoyable author. Her own life story sounds pretty astounding in itself - born during the Cultural Revolution and recruited by Madame Mao to be an actress in propaganda films, then exiled to hard labour before she managed to move west. Anyway, I am looking forward to reading more by her, and thanks again for the recommendations.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I was sad when I finished the last book :( I have been trying to find a series that is similar but I haven't had no luck yet...

I did find these ones "Peter and the Starcatchers", Peter and the Shadow Thieves, Peter and the Secret of Rundoon, Peter and the Sword of Mercy

I found the audio books of these ones and they are narrated by Jim Dale who narrated some of the Harry Potter books I listened to.. he does an amazing job of bringing books to life.. I haven't started listening to the Peter books yet though.. Right now I am listening to the dramatized version of the Chronicles of Narnia series

I just finished reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I hate that it ended. lol. I'm going to be making my way through the series. I've also started The Private Patient by PD James. And now I've just read the first review on that site:

"For most of the novel you wish someone would murder the lot of them."

I finished a really good book last week and am now drawing a blank as to what it was.

Marylin, you could check out the His Dark Materials series as well. The movie (The Golden Compass) was HORRIBLE, but I really enjoyed the books. :)

Sorry if that's already been mentioned here somewhere. I haven't been in this thread at all, but I finally started reading again so I might pop in more often!

Right now I'm enjoying finally diving into the Sookie Stackhouse series, which the show True Blood is based off of. I haven't watched any of the show yet, and have only read 3/4 of the first book, but so far it's great!! :) I just bought books 2 and 3 today!

Currently reading The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, the last part in an absolutely awesome series. Sad to see it coming to an end.

ooo. I keep hearing such great things about that series. I think I might pick it up after I'm done with what I'm reading now.

I highly, highly recommend it. I find it started a bit slow, but once you get through the first 100 pages, you won't be able to put it down.

As have I... I listen to a lot of TWiT podcasts, and Leo Laporte keeps talking very favorably about them when bringing up suggestions for Audible.com purchases. I hear a movie of the first one, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," is being cast now.

There are already movies of the series, though they're in Swedish, which is what the books were originally written in. But yes, they're starting to cast an American version for the trilogy. I'm actually trying to read the last book slowly, because I honestly don't want it to end!

I need some suggestions for reading material.. I want something similar to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or Chronicles of Narnia

Robin Hobb writes good fantasy. I really enjoyed the liveship series.

Oh yes, Im currently reading 'Under the Lemon Trees'. It's set in Cali and about Indian immigrants.

Last winter I "read" (by way of audiobook/podcasting) a techno-thriller called 7th Son: Descent. The first two sentences of the prologue are quite the hook:

The president of the United States is dead.

He was murdered in the morning sunlight by a four-year-old boy.

In the weeks afterward, seven seemingly-random-at-first men are bought together in an underground bunker to discover that they all look very much alike. They then learn that they're more than just long-lost brothers -- they're clones, and the original man they were cloned from appears to be the mastermind behind the assassination.

The author originally wrote 7th Son as a nearly-thousand-page thriller novel, then learned in dealing with publishers that no one reads thousand-page thrillers. He split it into three parts, and started publishing them as "podcast fiction" - a weekly episodic audio download where he reads a few chapters to you, then you wait until the next week for the continuation. Last year, the first book of the three, Descent, was published in paperback. It's a reeeeeally fun read if you're into near-sci-fi stories like this. :D

Since I've finished The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, and am terribly sad it's over... I picked up a new book today, Water for Elephants. I've heard excellent things about it, so I'm excited.
