Currently reading Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. It too is about to be a movie in February 2010. So far it's fantastic! It's about 2 US Marshals that are called to an island which is home to a hospital for the criminally insane. In the book, one of the patients, Rachel Solando, a "vicious" murderess has gone missing. They say she vanished straight out of her cell, yet it was locked and all the windows had not been tampered with but she also let a note with a puzzle. Who is 67? There is currently 66 patients at the institution...so who is 67?

That sounds....well, interesting! A little far fetched...an island that's home to a hospital for the criminally insane? Sounds like something I'd enjoy though.

Well, the island was used as a military base during the second world war. This story is based in the 1950's. And basically, the hospital is for the worst offenders and once regular hospitals cannot handle them anymore, they get sent to Shutter Island. :P They're generally mass murderers, serial killers, schizophrenics, types like Charles Manson. Like, Rachel Solando, she drowned her children in the pond near their house and then to top it all off, after she had drowned her children, she dragged them back to the house and sat them at the table where she proceeded to have one last meal with them...and then a neighbor came.

Wyatt - it's weird - I won't sit down at any Rand Society meeting - I mostly keep my views to myself.. But - seems to be many parallels in this century, from the book.

Oh, absolutely. I'm not an Objectivist or even "Randian", really. I'm not a right-wing nutjob. But I can't deny the sheer influence the book has had on my life, and, like you say, the parallels between it and current events.

Too bad I didn't take Ragnar's advice and buy gold when it was cheap.

I work in a bookstore, so I will clear this up...Paranormal Romance is any romance novels or smut that simply is not possible in real life. Most novels contain vampires, werewolves, shape shifters, mermen and mind you, all the men have chests of steel, and are remarkably handsome. Also, most of the men featured in paranormal romances have giant issues that cannot be broken but then once the ''right'' girl comes along, all of their issues are magically resolved...and yeah. :D

So..... like real life, really. :hehe:

At first I thought that "giant issues" was a euphemism.:blush:

Well, that too! But paranormal romance is what really sells right now! Which is why it's everywhere. Twilight is currently the biggest paranormal romance phase going on at the moment. But the fun part of romance novels is...read one and you've read them all. :P

Started Reading "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Carlotte Perkins Gilman. This is a re-read for me. I originally read it in high school and was talking about it with a co-worker this morning. She really loves the story and was going on and on about it. I realized that when I read this book when I was 16 or 17, I didn't really understand it. I just thought it was about a woman going insane and finding inner peace in that. It seems too short to be a book technically, more of a short story.

I'm having great fun with my new library card so I thought I would bump this thread. :D

Have been through a rash of James Patterson (thanks canadian_wife :) ), then moved on to the Bourne series (found them much better than the movies which I then watched). Now I have gone to something a little older - Jane Eyre - I'm loving it.

But waiting patiently for me is the new John Irving novel "Last Night in Twisted River." My favourite author for sure!

Jane Eyre is one of my favourite books...

I am still waiting for them to make a decent movie out of it.. all the ones I have seen have not really followed the book at all....

Good to know. I have vague memories of watching some version of it years ago and was thinking of looking for it again. I think I'll wait :)
