I just finished reading "The Time Traveller's Wife"....that was made into a movie this year.

Really liked it. Kinda slow to get into, but it's worth it.

I don't know if I want to see the movie...cause I know it won't live up to the book. They usually don't. I'll probably end up watching it anyways, lol

Wasn't it wonderful!! Another Saskatchewan author....

I had a hard time starting this book as well, and mentioned here that I didn't know whether to continue or not. I can't remember at what point I thought about throwing in the towel, but I continued....and boy, was I glad I did!!! It was such a wonderful book! I loved it!

I usually loathe movies made from books. I think the only movie that I enjoyed after having read the book was Cujo. I don't know how many times I've told people that...about hating the movies, however last Friday, Gene called up and asked me on a date. Dinner and a movie! So, we went to see The Time Traveller's Wife. Gene got to pick out the movie. Gene had never read the book. I had to stop several times in the movie and chant to myself "...this is a movie...NOT the book...QUIT comparing it...." It was enjoyable, but certainly lacks the depth of the movie....seriously lacks. At the same time, it was endearing, and we enjoyed it. Gene wants to read the book now! We both bawled.

I've just looked for the Three Day Road book at my library website and they have it! I tried to reserve it online but it won't let me because I don't have an account and it won't let me create one. So I filled out the "Contact us" form to request an account but it won't send it because I don't have an account. Okay. I'll just call them. Bzzzzz. Wrong answer. They don't open until 10:00am. Sheesh. I'll just go down there. Crazy library. I love how American systems cater to the employer and not the user.

I hope you can get it! If not, let me know, and I'll send you my copy.

Awwww. That's sweet of you, Carla. Thank you. :)

I'm at the library right now (see vent thread) and I've got the book!

I just looked it up in the catalog. It's not at this library but I've put a hold on it at another library. From the looks of it they're going to send it here for pickup. I'm guessing that's how it works.... the library system assumes you know how the library system works. <_< It didn't confirm or deny my hold, and it didn't tell me they'd let me know when it comes in. I'm assuming stuff now, too. lol.

I couldn't figure out how the computer use worked either. I asked at the front desk and she gave me a cursory description which didn't make much sense. So I finally figured out that you actually had to go to some station to sign up and be assigned a machine. Only it didn't tell you how to do it, so I had to guess that too. And then it spewed out a bunch of stuff in code which meant nothing whatsoever to me. Again, it assumed you knew what the codes meant. So then I had to go and ask again and then she sent me to someone else to explain it to me. I even looked around for instructions so that I didn't have to ask people stupid questions. Stupid library.

Oh. I guess this should have gone in the vent thread along with my vent about having no computer.

Currently reading The Lovely Bones. It's about a girl who is murdered by her neighbor and she has to watch from heaven as her friends trade rumours about what happened to her, she has to watch her murderer try to cover his tracks and her grieving family. It's extremely well written, and a page turner. And it's about to become a movie...but bleh!

In an earlier thread I mentioned I had got Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden. He's a Canadian author, living in New Orleans now I believe. A writer in residence. Anyway, I was sorting through my books the other day, I'm giving some away...I still have my book fair books in a box for heaven's sake! Anyway, I came across a book I got at the local book fair in August called Through Black Spruce another Joseph Boyden book!! I didn't recognize the name of the author of course in August as I hadn't been to Canada to get his other book. Just started it, but I just LOVE this guys writing. Looks to be a really really good read!!

Currently reading Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. It too is about to be a movie in February 2010. So far it's fantastic! It's about 2 US Marshals that are called to an island which is home to a hospital for the criminally insane. In the book, one of the patients, Rachel Solando, a "vicious" murderess has gone missing. They say she vanished straight out of her cell, yet it was locked and all the windows had not been tampered with but she also let a note with a puzzle. Who is 67? There is currently 66 patients at the institution...so who is 67?

That sounds....well, interesting! A little far fetched...an island that's home to a hospital for the criminally insane? Sounds like something I'd enjoy though.

Just finished up An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon . I note that her first book was in the 'historical romance' section, ages ago, and when I bought this last book, it was in the 'Paranormal Romance' section. ####### is 'paranormal romance'', anyway? eek ! I am sad, I was hoping to make one of her book tours this season, missed due to work.

I re-read Atlas Shrugged about 4 times a year.

Mostly I re-read Heinlein works .

I chanced upon a 22 year collection of Analog SF Mag from someone who was moving, got them all at a good price, and have been reading them for a year (nightly reading material in bed ) and JUST finished up the collection 2 days ago.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I'm just shocked that there's enough novels to have a Paranormal Romance section.

krikit - ya, me too. #######? the genre seems rife with vampire-human romance novels. Which, I don't 'get' - perhaps it's a sure sign that I'm just too old?

No wonder I like you so much! ;)

Obviously you know where my user name comes from then.

I've also read most of Heinlein's stuff, and the one Diana Gabaldon book I read, Dragonfly In Amber was VERY good. I'll read more of her stuff when I have more time.

Over the past few years I've been doing my best to read mainly classics of literature, but I throw in a pure entertainment / escapist novel every few months or so.

I work in a bookstore, so I will clear this up...Paranormal Romance is any romance novels or smut that simply is not possible in real life. Most novels contain vampires, werewolves, shape shifters, mermen and mind you, all the men have chests of steel, and are remarkably handsome. Also, most of the men featured in paranormal romances have giant issues that cannot be broken but then once the ''right'' girl comes along, all of their issues are magically resolved...and yeah. :D

Wyatt - it's weird - I won't sit down at any Rand Society meeting - I mostly keep my views to myself.. But - seems to be many parallels in this century, from the book.

I like to collect Heinlein books - try to get the different covers from overseas publishing... My best catch was an Italien reprint, 4 books. Artwork was a bit racy ;)

Gabaldon is a good read, IMO.
