To those who are opposed to gay marriage..... why?

Is it because you think it's "icky"?

Is it because it goes against YOUR religion?

Is there really any rational, definitive reason that it shouldn't be allowed?

How does it hurt YOU? That's what I really want to know. In what way does it affect your life?

In reverse, I don't understand why people are for gay marriage. Does it make you feel good that you don't have to do anything for another "poor, oppressed minority" other than cheer them on? Why does what makes liberals feel good always have to be forced on EVERYONE else to accept against their will?

People, who are not gay, are for gay marriage for numerous reasons. One of them is because if the state (or country) outlaws gay marriage, they are picking and choosing who is protected under the 14th amendment, which is not right. According to our constitution, everyone -all of the PEOPLE- are entitled to all of the rights. Therefore, how can our government decide who gets those rights and who does not? Does it personally hurt you that your gay neighbors can get married? No. Whether they are married or not, they will still live next door to you. But that marriage means something to them, to their families and friends, and often times to the ways in which they are able to live their lives (file taxes, for example).

You did not answer the question that was posed to you at all. Do you find gay people icky? Is it against YOUR religion (with great emphasis on the YOUR because another great thing about our country is that we have freedom of religion, or are you against the First Amendment as well???)?

So, How does it hurt you??

I don't see a right missing. Marriage is not a right, it's a privilege.

According to what? Your personal opinion? Sorry...not according to the Supreme Court.

Loving v. Virginia, 388 U.S. 1 (1967)[1], was a landmark civil rights case in which the United States Supreme Court declared Virginia's anti-miscegenation statute, the "Racial Integrity Act of 1924", unconstitutional, thereby overturning Pace v. Alabama (1883) and ending all race-based legal restrictions on marriage in the United States.

....

Decision

The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the convictions in a unanimous decision, dismissing the Commonwealth of Virginia's argument that a law forbidding both white and black persons from marrying persons of another race, and providing identical penalties to white and black violators, could not be construed as racially discriminatory. The court ruled that Virginia's anti-miscegenation statute violated both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. In its decision, the court wrote:

Marriage is one of the "basic civil rights of man," fundamental to our very existence and survival.... To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes, classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State's citizens of liberty without due process of law. The Fourteenth Amendment requires that the freedom of choice to marry not be restricted by invidious racial discrimination. Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State.

Let's not stand up against abuse, let a woman get beaten up by her husband, lets not allow women to have any education, lets not stand up against child abuse............I can go on and on about the list.

Fact is that Homosexuality does exist, let it be human, plant or animal kingdom. A quick wiki reference would lead us to 1500 species who observe homosexual behaviours. So there is nothing un-natural about it.

There is no feel good factor out here, the simple fact is--- Us living in a Humane society are suppressing other human. I am not just talking about America, but even in Indian law its illegal and I wish someday it won't be. Just like so many other people wished someday they would be able to marry someone out of their religion, out of their caste, out of their colour and their wish came true. I bet people gave thousands of reason why one shouldn't marry outside their religion and all that but look where are we now?

Your view is merely opinion. So is mine. In my view, deeming unions between gays cheapens marriage. I don't want marriage cheapened.

Oh, I totally agree with you that your view is opinion and so is mine. We both have our own opinions and I respect you for that. Freedom of Speech -thanks again First Amendment!

But the question was posed as to why you are against gay marriage and no answer has been given. Or let me rephrase this: what is your reason for thinking that it cheapens marriage?

Q&A s not a one-way street. I'm not going to keep answering questions just so my answrs can be questioned again. I don't understand gay marriage supporters any more than they understand gay marriage opposers. How does gay marriage benefit this country? Is it only about benefiting individuals or about benefiting the society? And how?

Because marriage is a fundamental right in this country, whether you want to recognize that truth or not.

If it was a right, you wouldn't need government to do it. It's regulated, not an absolute, not a fundamental.

So I take it that the Supreme Court stating that marriage is a fundamental right has no bearing on your POV of the matter?

To me, it's the same reason people get involved with charities. Friends, family, etc. affected negatively by <whatever> people are going to want to help out. Equal rights, or lack of them has a negative impact on their lives.

Gays have the right to marry. They just can't marry their same sex.

My statement still applies to your question why people want to be involved if it doesn't personally (self) affect them. What people involved in combating this is the opinion that there is a "right" missing. Which I agree with :)

It does affect people personally. School children will be forced to learn about Dora having two mommies and the like. "Rights" don't only stop with the people directly involved. Gay activists aren't at all shy about trying to indoctrinate impressionable minds that gayness is an acceptable lifesyle, and not everyone agrees with that.
