Mayor Matthew Ryan told the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin that there was a hostage situation involving a gunman with a high-powered rifle.

Two handguns were recovered at the scene, said a law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak about details of an ongoing hostage response and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

so far....there's nothing known for sure. they can't even confirm that the hostage situation is over yet.

Because that is how media pushes gun control. He probably had something like 30-06 or 308 and that's why they report "high power rifle". If he had a Mini 14 or something, it would be "assault rifle". If he had a bolt action 1943 Mosin-Nagant, it would be "military grade fighting rifle" Damn, even if shooter had Gamo airgun with a scope, i bet news would report "sniper rifle"

but then, some cops do keep a "drop assault rifle" with the numbers ground off in the trunk these days.

As for the comment above me on the media ^ with breaking news stories you go with what facts you have to be first. We examined this by watching the coverage of various networks when the Presidential Election was going on. It's not always the best way but there isn't time to research everything and they follow up with corrections shortly. Just like when the World Trade Center attacks happened there was hysteria and the networks were attempting to be the first to report but no one really knew what was happening until more reports were coming in or some organization was taking credit for it.

Do YOU actually believe what you are saying? Protected by 1st amendment? Yeah, right - just like the right to bear arms is protected by the 2nd, but it doesn't prevent government from violating it in every possible way.
