Do you have work permit card? If not then, first get EAD (work permit) by filling I-765 and then apply SSN. Check the link www.ssa.gov , click “requesting a social security card” (pop-up new window) and after series of question (as applicable in your case) will find answer for “what document require for SSN”.

Then go to your local social security office with Green Card, passport (any other form of identity, if any) and completed form SS-5. It will take 20 minutes to complete the process and you will SSN in two weeks. Good luck.

If you have the actual I-551 card, that and your birth certificate is all you need if the name on the I-551 card is the name you want on your SSN card. You don't need to take the SS-5. They will printout an application for you to review and sign if all the info is correct.

The amount of time it will take for you to be assigned an SSN and receive a card is going to depend on the amount of time it takes to verify your status. If you are lucky they can do it while you are in the office, you should receive your card in the mail within two weeks. Otherwise you could be waiting weeks or even months.

Thanks for the help guys, went there today. Took my greencard, passport and was in and out within 15 mins, got a recipt to say i will get my ss card within 2 weeks woohoo :)

They had you sign an application they printed out? Plus you can go back Monday to get the number if need to know it before the card arrives.
