I'm wondering why you had to take a written and driving test. Was your UK license still valid? I walked in, paid them, and got a paper license. They took my Canadian driver's license at that time. About a week or so later, my Texas driver's license showed up in the mail. I got the regular kind like US citizens get.

No written test. No driving test..... Oddly enough, I got a 7 year license. Can't complain about that. You're supposed to get a 6 year license. Oh well. :)

I used my 2 year green card as proof of status.

Tjere are different rules for Canadians than for everyone else probably.

Also, you got the "regular" kind perhaps because this was before the end of last year? I think this is a new law. When you have to renew it, if you are not a US citizen by then, probably you will get the "foreign" kind too..

I got my driver's license June 2006. I don't have my 2 year GC yet. I only had my passport, SSN, EAD card & NOA (AOS) at that time. My driver's license is regular DL like US citizen get. And also I got 7 years license. I'm just wondering about the new law.

Well, my temporary paper license (while I wait for the plastic card in the mail) expires in 6 years' time on my birthday ... I'll let everyone know whether it's a usual one or if I have to make do with the Temporary Visitor designation one! Part of me thinks that until I have my 10-year green card, that would be understandable, as officially I'm a CONDITIONAL PR till then. But once we each get the 10-year GC we're supposed to be treated pretty much the same as citizens (aside from certain exceptions like voting). For 10-year GC holders it would seem ridiculous to me for them to have the Temporary Visitor designation. Watch this space.......

Well, folks, the verdict is in. My plastic card DL arrived in the mail today (only 8 days after I passed my test!) and guess what? It's a standard DL! Not one turned up the other way, not one with a Temporary Visitor designation. Just a regular license like every US citizen has. Maybe this new ruling is ok for us GC holders after all... :) Wishing everyone all the best for any upcoming DL tests!!

Si, man... and hoorah for the judge who, just in the past couple of days, issued the ruling that could stop the Texas DPS from enacting its own immigration policies!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

One thing that I am really curious about is I know that I can drive myself to the driving test on my UK license which is valid for a year, but what if I fail the test, can I still drive back on my uk license.

Park around the corner, out of view of the state trooper.

Today we went to the DPS to show the green card to get the "temporary" taken off the license. They charged $10, took a new picture, and said he would get a "normal" license in the mail.

And this is the news article about the ruling on the temporary license rules change. Apparently the basis of the judgement is that the DPS (or any state agency) can't randomly make new rules of this type unless the legislature has passed a law to that effect. So they aren't debating if it's a good rule or not, just that the DPS didn't have authority to create the rule. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/specia...on/6366630.html

Sadly, while up-catching on newspapers after having been out of town this weekend, I read that the DPS is appealing the judge's ruling, which apparently means that things are back to the way the DPS had them.

Yep, that's what the lady doing the new license for him said. She said nothing has changed for now is what the offices have been told because DPS is appealing. I personally don't have a problem with the rule, other than K1s get kinda left out until they get an EAD card or GC. Some states have written their policy to allow K1s to show their AOS NOA as proof that they are allow to remain. But I can see that it would be difficult to put an expiration date on a license with just a "whenever this goes through" type proof like the NOA. And AOS could be denied. So I guess it's not a bad rule considering illegals were flocking to Texas from other states because it was easy to get a driver's license, which often gave the impression that they were "legal" by having it.

  • 3 weeks later...

Went a few days ago to change my "Temp": showed them my GC, paid $10, and was told I will receive a standard one... Not sure what's going on anymore! We will see in a few weeks when I get it. This whole thing is so silly. The trick is, don't renew or issue a DL without a green card if they are so scared about illegals... as if that will stop them from driving! We shouldn't be discriminated upon because of "them": we are legal and we got our DL like anyone else....

My wife got DL a couple of months ago using her EAD.

It was issued sideways with something in red about Temp Vistor Status, but expire on DL itself was like 6 years.

About 1 month later she lost her DL, and we went back and got her another DL using her GC since it arrived after she got her first licenses.

This time her DL was a standard issued State Of Texas Driver Licenses.....

So when my fiance comes on the K1, he won't be able to get a driver's license until he gets the EAD?? Yikes!
